The latest “The Boys” trailer.

Don’t watch this at work, around your kids, or in front of your mom.

It’s streaming on Amazon on July 27th, and that first sentence? That applies to the show itself, from what I’ve heard and seen. Although I don’t know whether The Boys as a show is gonna go quite as far as the comic book did. It might, but that’s pretty dependent on how ruthless the production crew was. Or how willing to be visceral about it all.

PS: Basic premise: imagine superheroes, only they don’t have the Code of Honor (Comic Books Code) Disadvantage at the -15 point level. Or, indeed, at all. All they have is a team of people who will put bullets through the supers’ heads if things get too bad. The Boys isn’t bad, but it may very well be a taste that you might not want to acquire.

  1. Reddit was running sponsored links for this a month or two ago. The language used in the ad turned me off.

On a more practical note, the basic idea is somewhat similar to Brandon Sanderson’s Reckoners series (Steelheart, Firefight, and Calamity). In that setting, supers suddenly appeared out of nowhere. And they’re ALL sociopaths. National governments are gone, and supers run the cities that they haven’t razed in their battles with each other.

The Reckoners are a group of normals who operate in cells, and have organized themselves to fight back against the supers, largely using targeted assassinations.
