The ‘I Have Questions’ TERMINATOR: DARK FATE trailer.

You gotta wonder: is the production itself just in full DGAF mode? “We’re not gonna explain the timelines. We’re not gonna fix continuity. We’re not gonna think about this at all, because the last person who did think about this too hard ended up sneezing his brains out. We’re just all here, trying to figure out what the hell to do right now.”

And that could actually work for them. Besides, it’s nice to see the old folks get roles in an action flick. And don’t they look like they’ve been in the wars, too.

  1. I missed some of the movies, so maybe it was in those, but why is Sarah Connor threatening to kill the iteration of the Terminator that helped stop Judgment Day? I mean, I can see wanting to kill the first one (if it weren’t already reduced to a hand and a chip), but the second?
It’s a better trailer than the first one, but not by much. I think I’ll watch something else when it comes out.

    1. Sarah Connor was only in the first two movies, iirc. She was also in the TV series, of course, though I’m guessing that’s going to be out of continuity. And given that she’s dead in all of the later movies, those other movies are also irrelevant, as they haven’t happened yet. None of those provide any particular clue about why she’d want to destroy the Arnold-bot aside from “it’s a terminator”.

As for why she wants to destroy this particular Arnold-bot? Your guess is as good as mine. Though it strikes me that there’s something a bit odd going on with it. The “enhanced human” knows about it, which suggests that it didn’t just show up in response to the latest evil terminator. So it’s probably been there for a while. I suspect there’s more to this particular one than we might expect based on just a few seconds worth of trailer.

Terminators – even reprogrammed ones – don’t typically operate safe houses out in the wilderness.

  2. I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: in a franchise with the basic premise of time travel to change the past, “continuity” is pretty much whatever the writers want it to be.

The trailer looks like it could be an enjoyable movie (but I also enjoyed Genisys*). My only worry is Sarah Connor’s “I was her” line is literally true, and they’re going to try some time loop ouroboros thing that will have a weak payoff and leave everybody confused.

    1. Heh.
      .
I figure “Terminator” has become a comic book.
      .
The retcons will be whatever’s necessary for the writers to get to write what they want ..
      .
This, of course, means the *quality* is only as good as the writers’ ability to surf** the zeitgeist, not get sucked out to sea by it.

** this is the polite way of saying “don’t be a political tool in a medium that’s not supposed to be about politics”, of course.

  3. Is it just me? Or does it look like this is pretty much the exact same movie that we’ve seen multiple times now? That’s right down to the “evil terminator rampages through a local holding facility (in this case, a police station… again).”
