BLACK WIDOW (perhaps) begins the transition to a primarily digital release.

At least, that’s my guess. BLACK WIDOW definitely won’t be released in theaters on May 1st, at least. And, contra GeekTyrant: I don’t think that they’re just going to delay theatrical release. There’s too much potential money on the table: this is the first MCU movie of the post-Endgame era. And it’s likely that Disney would like getting that money, too.

I do wonder what Disney’s play is going to be, though. Release the DVDs and VoD early, go with a limited theatrical release later? Put it entirely on Disney+ and make people subscribe to see it? Something else that I, an admitted non-expert on this sort of thing, have not considered? Whatever it is, they’re wargaming it out over at the Mouse right now. And I suspect that the eventual answer may redefine standard practices going forward.

PS: This would all be very fascinating, if only I wasn’t in self-imposed quarantine in the middle of it.

  1. I completely expect Disney+. One month costs about the same as some Theater tickets, if not less. Honestly surprised a major studio hasn’t tried this sooner.

    .

Surely this is Spiderman Far From Home? First MCU move of Phase 4, though, whatever that means.
