    Ah well, certainly not the worst example of H-wood showing a complete lack of understanding of what winter is like northern states.

    1. John Hughes is from Chicago, and many of his movies have autobiographical elements. Both National Lampoon’s Vacation and Christmas Vacation are based on the short stories which is an exaggeration of actual events.

    2. Yep, those windows are pretty clearly a converted/enclosed “sleeping porch”, i.e. a “three season room”, with (optional) windows opening onto the backyard, intended for sleeping semi-outdoors in summer, but not intended to be used in winter.

      I grew up in a house in the shadow of Chicago that had one, the older sister slept out there fairly often in summertime. The mosquitoes liked me too much to make it appealing.

      Thing is, these porches are usually on the ground floor – which seems to be confirmed by the squirrel on what’s presumably a clothesline pole .. so as with many Hollywood houses .. the architecture of Ferris’s house has his room both upstairs and on the ground floor facing the yard ..
