Anybody playing CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS COLD WAR yet?

I’m not gonna lie: CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS COLD WAR looks tempting, on a meta-level. I don’t play shooters, you see. But I do kind of want to be sent out by the Gipper to covertly fight Commies in a suitably deniable fashion, so I’m not sure.

I also suspect I should wait a few months until the bugs get shaken out of the game. Which would be smart, because I have books to put to be anyway. But since when do I go for extra smartness?

Folks have any thoughts on this?

  1. Well, I am not playing right now as my computer power supply went kablooey, but I’ve seen Gehrity and Smug playing and enjoying it.

The complaints I’ve been seeing are from the Zombie players. In the past dozen or so zombie modes in CoD, there have been easter eggs leading to an over arcing story and there’s been races by those players to figure out the steps and get to the end. But this year, a number of streamers got keys a few days ago and have been able to run the levels ahead of time so that race became meaningless. But that’s not an issue to someone trying just to follow The Gipper and throw thug off buildings.

  2. Modern and near modern* shooters tend to abuse my willing suspension of disbelief beyond the point of enjoyment.
If I shoot an enemy in the head with a high powered rifle, I expect them to drop. Especially if they’re not wearing a helmet.**
(Exception for horror and hellspawn. If something is unnatural to begin with, direct kinetic force having little to no effect is justified. Shooting a ghost isn’t a good use of ammunition.)

*Offense and defense might theoretically reach parity at some point in the future, so Sci-fi has wiggle room. Especially when magic and undeath are finagled in.
**Yes, I ragequit The Division after the first optional boss. Why do you ask?

  3. Didn’t get it myself. I’m interested, but at the same time I’m pretty certain that there’s going to be a plot twist somewhere that will take the game in a direction that negates the enjoyment of killing Commies for The Gipper.

On the other hand, Spider-Man: Miles Morales came out on Thursday. So I’m still playing a brand new game.
