Spent two hours trying to get…

…OUTRIDERS to work. I’m not gonna snarl over it, because first-day stuff happens; but I’m just getting a black screen. I am on the verge of uninstalling, then installing the game again, just on general principles. In fact, strike that: I might as well just go ahead and do that now. Grr. Arrgh.

…Okay, maybe a little snarling.

  1. That’s a shame. Had the demo been working for you?

I tried Evil Genius 2, instead. It’s disappointing. It’s not necessarily that it’s a *bad* game, per se, though it’s also not particularly great. It’s that all of the little quirks and things that made the original so great – such as using seemingly random items like bookshelves to interrogate the agents of the Forces of Justice – are gone. There’s a number of design decisions that I’m unhappy about. But it’s the lack of things such as the interrogation device options that really rams home how this is not the game I loved way back when.

  2. I held off on this one until after release so I could watch an ACG review on it. The Steam reviews that are negative are mostly about connection issues from what I can see- there are just a lot of them.
Far Cry 5 managed to get me disgusted enough with it that I am not going to bother finishing it. Developers: I get that you dislike conservatives. I get that you dislike fundamentalist, evangelical Christians. Don’t spend most of the game building the villain(s) up and actually trying to make the bad guys semi sympathetic only to have the villain confess to murdering his newborn daughter because God told him to. Go F*ck yourselves.
So, at this point, Outriders would have been a welcome distraction. May do another run of Cyberpunk. I am even considering trying to hook the 360 up and doing a grand Mass Effect run. Is Origin still working? I might give Andromeda another play.

    1. Did a reinstall of the game and it booted up this time. Played a couple of levels’ worth last night. It’s good so far, but sweet f*cking JESUS but these psychopathic sad sacks absolutely need the motivational feel of my battered combat sneaker on all of their asses. This “we’re all stuck in the dark without electronics, the other side eats babies, woe is us” bullsh*ttery of theirs got old, real fast.

      1. I said what the heck and got it. Played a few hours. Pretty good, but the grim dark is strong.
Is it just me or does the protagonist (if you play a dude) sound like either the Guy from Days Gone or Holden from the Expanse?

        1. I dunno. The only time I play a dude in video games is when there’s no option. Or it’s Geralt, if they ever bring out a Witcher game where it’s an option. Geralt’s too cool to not play.

  3. I see you’re trying out Outriders. Nice. I helped out on that game. I hope you enjoy it!

    1. I do! My wife asked me why, since I apparently want to boot everybody in the ass until they shape up. I told her the combat’s perfectly suited for me: “All that cover’s for the bad guys! You, just run up and set them on fire! Heal yourself! Spray bullets around until your set-things-on-fire abilities unlock again! Get in their faces! You’re gonna do all of that anyway, because you aren’t a Navy SEAL and we all know it, so: [expletive deleted] it! Go monster-nuts, Outrider!”

…None of that is a criticism. It took me a while to realize that I’m the scary monster in the combats, with ‘tactics’ to match, but now that I’ve internalized it things go much more smoothly. If only I could stop reflexively switching weapons in mid-fight…

      1. Yes, learning to match play style with the class you’re using is key and Pyro is definitely a pro-offense class. Other classes favor tanking or long distance sneaky play. Find your favorite and go nuts.

  4. Dang it, and I’m almost maxed out on my gaming budget, but this one sounds fun.

    1. You can try out the free demo which is the first few hours of the game (and any progress earned can transfer to the whole game if you decide to buy it later)
