Tweet of the Day, Whoa: Maybe The BATGIRL Movie DIDN’T Suck? edition.

I’m not gonna lie: I take Critical Drinker’s takes on film fairly seriously. He’s pretty indifferent, and sometimes brutal, about how politely he expresses his opinions. So if he says that everything he’s heard about BATGIRL suggests that the movie wasn’t that awful, I will take that seriously. Not blindly, since the people he talked to are likely biased towards the film. But definitely seriously.

Yeah, don’t expect to see the BATGIRL movie any time soon.

It’s the last three words here that are relevant:

“I saw the movie,” said [DC Co-Chairman/CEO Peter] Safran, “There are a lot of incredibly talented people in front of and behind the camera in that film, but that was not releasable. It happens sometimes.”

Bolding mine. “Not releasable” is bad* enough, because it’s a more polite way to say BATGIRL was so radioactive, we sent it over to the Department of Energy for disposal. “It happens sometimes” is even worse, because the subtext there is The discussion’s over on this, folks. Seriously, BATGIRL must be at BATMAN AND ROBIN levels…

*Well, ‘bad’ for anyone who wanted to see this flick. I’m ready enough to believe that a studio executive might be able to recognize a stinker on sight.

Joss Whedon drops Batgirl.

Why? Supposedly… “”Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story,” Whedon told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement.”  No story?  No story?  Since when has ‘lacking a story’ been even a speed bump on the Hollywood journey?
