Leonardo DiCaprio as the Joker?

That’s what the fever swamp rumor mill is suggesting: “Sources say Warners will make an ambitious attempt to use [Martin] Scorsese to bring Leonardo DiCaprio into the world of comic-book movies.” The idea is that Scorsese and DiCaprio work together a lot, and thus having the one might entice the other to play the Joker for Scorsese’s DC Comics art film*.  Apparently this would not replace Jared Leto in DCU continuity, which will either please you or sadden you, depending. Tweet of the Day, This Man Is A Batman.

He may be an Adam West Batman, but dagnabbit: there have been worse versions to wear the cape and cowl.  The bad guys didn’t get away, which is the important thing.  Also: this really needs the Batman 1966 fight music.  It REALLY needs it.

DC doing Gotham By Gaslight Batman animated flick.

It’s supposedly leaked, but I have to wonder whether I should be writing ‘leaked.’ After all, what is the downside of people learning a month and a half early that the upcoming Batman and Harley Quinn DVD is going to have a sneak peek at a hitherto-unannounced Gotham By Gaslight project?  The original title is popular,* and strategically revealing the feature on the DVD may spark both sales and interest.

I mean, I may now pick up B&HQ.  Because Gotham By Gaslight would be pretty cool, if they do it right. And if it works, they could do The Doom That Came To Gotham, which would also be pretty cool (and is exactly what you’d expect it to be, from the title).

*For those who don’t know, it’s a Mignola/Augustyn Batman story that reimagines him in Victorian England, hunting Jack the Ripper.  The favorable reception of this caused DC to come up with their alternate DC history Elseworld series. So, pretty seminal, there.

The ‘Batman & Harley Quinn’ trailer.

It’s not a very imaginative name, is it?  ‘Batman & Harley Quinn’ sounds like a working title that they chose for the filing while somebody came up with a new, better one; only that person was let go, or something, and by the time somebody noticed it was too late to come up with anything else.

…That’s my guess, at least.

This one is gonna be direct to digital on August 15th.

PS: There should be all sorts of entertaining subtext, given that Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are dating in the comics now (and maybe in the upcoming standalone Harley Quinn movie). What’s that?  Oh, yeah, Suicide Squad ended up making almost seven hundred and fifty million bucks globally.  That’s enough for sorta-kinda sequels.

Apparently Saturday is Batman Day…

…at least, according to Mondo (which is apparently what happens when trendy art-types* suddenly realize that comic book geeks can start to bring in some serious cash once they hit 35 or so).  They’re doing a couple of posters of characters from the Batman: Animated Series and New Batman Adventures animated series that are admittedly pretty sweet looking. But what I want to know is: who gets to decide that September 17th is Batman Day?  Is there some sort of board doing oversight? And, if so: how does one get on that board?  It sounds like something that I could maybe do from home.

*Who may or may not secretly be comic book geeks themselves. Or even possibly not secretly comic book geeks. I can’t keep track of what’s ironically hip these days.

The ‘Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders’ trailer.

…Well. Adam West sounds very old in this; the animation isn’t actually all that great; and my two kids will not care at all, at all, at all.  I have to remind myself sometimes that that last part is the only part that really matters, here.  My kids are entranced by the 1966 Batman.  They’re gonna love this.

Out October 11th/November 1st.

This Justice League Action trailer reminds me of Batman: the Brave and the Bold.

I mean this as a compliment, of course: I made damned sure that my children’s first introduction to Batman was that series. Between it and the Lego DC Superhero stuff they should be inoculated somewhat against other, lesser DC fare. Anyway, this looks fun:

Fun and light-hearted and it has Plastic Man in it which makes everything all right. Plastic Man is one of my touchstones for a DC offering; if he’s there, it’s not likely to be too dark. It almost can’t be.
