VA AG Cuccinelli to invoke VATA over Climategate?

Elections have consequences for the other guy, too.

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is invoking a state anti-fraud law to demand the University of Virginia turn over years worth of documents related to climate scientist Michael Mann, targeting about $500,000 in grants that funded Mann’s studies.

Cuccinelli, a Republican who is separately suing the federal government over regulation of carbon emissions, issued the school a civil subpoena late last month probing “possible violations” of the Virginia Fraud Against Taxpayers Act by the former U.Va. professor. Mann, now a professor at Penn State, is famous for creating the controversial “hockey stick” graph charting a spike in global temperatures.

…I am so glad to report that Michael Mann – creator of the incredible Hockey Stick curve and one of the scientists most heavily implicated in the Climategate scandal – is about to get a very nasty shock. When he turns up to work on Monday, he’ll find that all 27 of his colleagues at the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University have received a rather tempting email inviting them to blow the whistle on anyone they know who may have been fraudulently misusing federal grant funds for climate research.

Under US law, regardless of whether or not a prosecution results, the whistleblower stands to make very large sums of money: it is based on a percentage of the total government funds which have been misused, in this case perhaps as much as $50 million.

Who here is saddened by this news? I am saddened by this news: why, it’s enough to make me break down and cry. No, really: there’s not a chance that I can get a piece of this. Curse my liberal arts degree…

Phrase of the day: ‘Climategate Denier.’

As per Simon Scowl of Deceiver.com, who uses it with malice aforethought against Cubslayer Gore. The context: Gore claimed that the Climategate emails were ten years old, and the CNN guy called him on it right away, and Gore… said nothing further about it. Simon Scowl:

His financial and psychological investment in this crap is way too deep for him to acknowledge such, ahem, inconvenient truths. The only way to deal with such a massive blow to his ego is to just bull through it. Pretend it’s not happening. He is, to borrow a phrase, a Climategate denier.

Perfect.

So what do we call this? The ‘Warm War?’

Sorry about all the AGW stuff, but it was a slow weekend and I’m still recovering from the shock of realization that yea, indeed, the universe let me become a father again. Clearly the end times are upon us.

Anyway, there is some suggestion that the Russians are behind the recent embarrassing Climategate data dump:

Suspicions were growing last night that Russian security services were behind the leaking of the notorious British ‘Climategate’ emails which threaten to undermine tomorrow’s Copenhagen global warming summit.

An investigation by The Mail on Sunday has discovered that the explosive hacked emails from the University of East Anglia were leaked via a small web server in the formerly closed city of Tomsk in Siberia.

(Via JammieWearingFool) Specifically, the Russian FSB, which is of course the successor organization to the KGB. You know: the organization that Vladimir Putin used to run. And if you’re wondering why a slightly institutionally paranoid nation-state that’s a major producer of fossil fuels might be interested in publishing compromising materials involving groups trying to cut fossil fuel production… well, read that again until you work it out.

On the bright side, maybe this will encourage Democrats to start pushing back on (unrelated) Russian attempts to aggrandize themselves at our expense. It could happen: Ted Kennedy is dead, after all.

Because I’ve already done Quote of the Day. Still, on the news that Cubslayer Gore has apparently decided to cut back his Copenhagen appearances in this brave, post-Climategate New World, Deceiver.com notes:

How great would it be if Al Gore skipped Copenhagen altogether? If I were him right now, I’d be laying in bed with my laptop and pint after pint of Chunky Monkey, watching the Google search results for “Climategate” skyrocket, weeping and whispering, “Why? Why, Gaia, why?” Hey wait, that’s what I’m doing right now.

Mind you, this assumes that Gore has a working sense of shame. Given the way that he keeps insisting on killing polar bears with his brazenly profligate energy use, that’s doubtful.

Climategate watch: Phil Jones to be peer-reviewed.

Took them long enough.

LONDON — Britain’s University of East Anglia says the director of its prestigious Climatic Research Unit is stepping down pending an investigation into allegations that he overstated the case for man-made climate change.

The university says Phil Jones will relinquish his position until the completion of an independent review into allegations that he worked to alter the way in which global temperature data was presented.

And one hopes that they do a better job with him than with what Jones produced.
