Movie of the Week: Escape from New York.

The sequel was awful – except for the bit with Bruce Campbell in it – but Escape from New York was pretty good, as long as you understood going in that your disbelief would not so much be suspended as it would be expelled, then shipped off to military school. One of John Carpenter’s better ones… and it’s always frustrating, because you never know with that director whether or not he’s going to be pretty darn good, or just plain bad. Just saying, that’s all.

And so we shine the sun on Daybreakers. But for not long enough.

Movie of the Week: Daybreakers.

Not deep cinema by any stretch of the imagination: but Daybreakers was a pretty good popcorn flick and it won’t ladle too much dead weight onto the eventual sequel.

And thus, no more The War of the Worlds. At least, not until we invent a working FTL drive.

I am back from Daybreakers.

[UPDATE]: Like Jimmie, Those Who Hunt the Night would make for a good flick.

Assessment: not half bad. It had a 1950s Atomic Horror-style cheerful disregard for basic science – essentially, it waved its hands and chanted ‘classic vampirism is an infectious disease, and never mind all the supernatural elements’ three times while turning widdershins – but that was OK: it’s a horror flick with an action-movie flavor, not District 9.  The costumers did a nice job, as did the people in charge of thinking up all the little details of a world run by vampires for vampires.  Gory as all get-out, but it’s a vampire flick, so, well.

Also: expect sequels if this movie makes enough money.  Actually, the concept would make for a decent weekly television series…

So. Daybreakers.

Does it suck?

MTV’s sort of comparing this movie to Twilight, which isn’t exactly comforting.
