Harry Reid pretends to think that the border is secure.

There will be no peace in Congress while this man is Senate Majority Leader.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Tuesday asserted the southern border is secure despite the massive surge of illegal minors from Central America that has overwhelmed federal agencies.

…Yeah, let me interrupt real fast: the above sentence is how The Hill expects its writers to handle utter nonsense like Harry Reid’s. Sure, the temptation to instead gibber and meep at the sanity-ripping talking points may be nigh-insurmountable, but The Hill expects the people who write for it to surmount the challenge anyway. It’s a professionalism thing. Besides, this isn’t even the most idiotic thing said to a political reporter.

“The border is secure,” he told reporters after the Senate Democrats’ weekly policy lunch. “[Sen.] Martin Heinrich [(D-N.M.)] talked to the caucus today. He’s a border state senator. He said he can say without any equivocation the border is secure.”

…I bet that Martin Heinrich is now regretting taking the last piece of banana cream pie from the Senate cafeteria even though everybody knows that Harry Reid loves banana cream pie and that he looks forward to having a piece of it every Thursday. Because some people have no consideration and Heinrich is apparently one of them. Continue reading Harry Reid pretends to think that the border is secure.

I’m going to really enjoy the 2016 Nevada Senate election

Last week, Sen. Reid was in rare form following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn part of the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate. The 5-4 ruling declared that closely held for-profit businesses, such as craft retailer Hobby Lobby, do not have to provide some forms of birth control to female employees if doing so violates the owners’ religious beliefs. Sen. Reid eviscerated the decision. “The one thing we are going to do during this work period, sooner rather than later, is to ensure that women’s lives are not determined by virtue of five white men,” Sen. Reid said.

That Sen. Reid would inject race into criticism of a ruling with gender-based ramifications was bad enough. What made the comment far worse, however, was that it was completely false. Justice Clarence Thomas, who happens to be black, sided with the court’s majority in the Hobby Lobby case.

Ain’t that a shame: Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell hate each other.

We’re all really broken up about this, sure:

…it was another ugly yet routine day in the dysfunctional United States Senate. Reid and McConnell can barely stand each other.

Their feud echoes America’s political mood: Polarized. Angry. Untrusting. And it’s a key reason Congress doesn’t work.

But it’s not really a key reason.  Even if Harry Reid was sufficiently neurotypical to try to work with Mitch McConnell more (or, indeed, at all) nothing in Congress would still get done, because the actual key reason why ‘Congress doesn’t work’ is because the House of Representatives refuses to enable Barack Obama’s dysfunctional ideas of what constitutes responsible government.  Which is why we have a bicameral legislature: our government was designed by some of the smartest functional paranoids the world has ever seen.  Our current situation, in other words, is not a failure of the system: it is a defense mechanism of the system. Harry Reid deracinates Clarence Thomas.

I’m telling you: Harry Reid was hit one too many times in the noggin without suitable head protection. The exact quote (about the Hobby Lobby decision, of course): “The one thing we are going to do during this work period, sooner rather than later, is to ensure that women’s lives are not determined by virtue of five white men.”

Leaving aside for the moment that Harry Reid is trying to flog a somewhat simplistic (which is Beltway-Speak for ‘wrong’) narrative… the last time I checked, Clarence Thomas was an African-American. More to the point, the last time I checked it was generally conceded that allowing old, white rich guys to make these kinds of snap judgments about other people’s racial identities wasn’t really working out for society. Frankly, it’s probably best if nobody does that – but, seriously? Harry Reid gets to be the Gatekeeper To The Land Of Whiteness? I can feel my IQ dropping at the mere contemplation of that particular idiocy… Continue reading Harry Reid deracinates Clarence Thomas.

Harry Reid opposes gay marriage!

Either that, or all the boxing Harry Reid did is starting to catch up with him.  Your call.

And let’s be honest: it’s entirely possible that Harry Reid actually does have a problem with homosexuality. It’s just that he belongs to a political party that ruthlessly enforces uniformity of thought on that topic. Which is a shame, really; doing that doesn’t stop people from crimethink. It just teaches them to hide it well. Fortunately, Dick Cheney and I belong to a party that is far more sensible about its heretics…

Gov. Brian Sandoval (R, Nevada) takes a big step forward in toppling Harry Reid in 2016.

If, you know, that’s going to be a thing that he wants to do.

Let me set the scene: Brian Sandoval is the (popular) governor of Nevada, and he’s going to win re-election in November. Yes, yes, there’s always the chance of scandal and/or unforeseen circumstances – but last night the Democrats’ top vote-getter in their gubernatorial primary was None of the above*.  Sandoval’s term-limited, so at 51 the man has to think about what happens next.  Basically, there are two options for him: a Vice President spot, or the Senate. Both would involve him leaving early, which Brian Sandoval said that he wouldn’t do.. but as the RCP link notes above Sandoval said that when he ran for Nevada Attorney General. That ended up with Sandoval leaving that job (as per a Harry Reid scheme) in 2004 to go be a federal judge… and then leaving that job to run for Governor in 2010.

Not that I – or many other Republicans – really mind any of that.  We typically don’t punish our politicians for deciding that, gosh and by golly, they’re going to run for something anyway.  Besides, in 2010 Brian Sandoval beat Rory Reid (Harry Reid’s kid) like a red-headed stepchild.  That’s the sort of thing that can endear a politician to the Republican base… Continue reading Gov. Harry Reid is publicly confused again. #bergdahl

I don’t think he’s doing it deliberately, either.

Or perhaps he meant to do it deliberately, only he… forgot? Discussing Reid’s mental state is getting to be an awkward topic.

There will be no peace in the Senate while Harry Reid is Senate Majority Leader.

I believe that I have said THAT before, but it bears repeating.

It’s important to understand how much Mr. Reid’s tactics have changed the Senate. Not too long ago it was understood that any Senator could get a floor vote if he wanted it. The minority party, often Democrats, used this right of amendment to sponsor votes that would sometimes put the majority on the spot. It’s called politics, rightly understood. This meant the Senate debated national priorities and worked its bipartisan will. Harry Reid’s Senate has become a deliberate obstacle to democratic accountability.

Harry Reid: wait until the Koch brothers get a load of *me*.

Oh, dear.

I bet.

I just bet.

Harry Reid: The polls are skewed!

Well now.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid maintained that his party’s candidates lead “virtually all over the country,” rejecting polls that undermine that claim as compromised by bad methodology.

“We’re ahead virtually all over the country,” Reid replied during a Senate briefing when asked about a Pew poll showing that the current political environment is more hostile towards Democrats than in 2010. “I don’t need to run through the states with you, but, we’re doing okay.”

Reid said recent polls aren’t reliable because pollsters can’t get in touch with a lot of voters who use cellphones.
