Quote of the Day, The Revolution Will Be Self-Catered edition.

Charles C.W. Cooke:

…I am not at all convinced that […] the “most recent wave of political correctness is cresting.” Rather, I suspect that it is merely in the process of mutating into a form in which it is less obviously damaging to progressive interests. That “backlash” that David notes? It’s not really a backlash at all. It’s a rearguard action. And that “concern” that we are supposedly hearing from Jezebel and The Nation? It is not the product of intellectual honesty or of a more general desire to institute academic liberty on campus; it’s a self-serving attempt to fight back against those revolutionaries who are eating their own.

In retrospect, it may not have been the smartest idea in the world for the Activist Left to teach eighteen year old students with no relevant life experience and less in the way of institutionalized suffering to be Jacobins. You end up with ‘revolutionaries’ with no sense of proportion, less powers of judgement, and one Hell of a sense of entitlement. Oh, and a galloping case of intolerance for anybody in power, which would include – amusingly! – the Activist Left.

Bon appetit.

I can tell you EXACTLY what @freddiedeboer can do. (Language warning)

Frederik deBoer can be ripped apart by his own faction for writing this (language warning):

Jon Chait is an asshole. He’s wrong. I don’t want these kids to be more like Jon Chait. I sure as hell don’t want them to be less left-wing. I want them to be more left-wing. I want a left that can win, and there’s no way I can have that when the actually-existing left sheds potential allies at an impossible rate. But the prohibition against ever telling anyone to be friendlier and more forgiving is so powerful and calcified it’s a permanent feature of today’s progressivism. And I’m left as this sad old 33 year old teacher who no longer has the slightest fucking idea what to say to the many brilliant, passionate young people whose only crime is not already being perfect.

…and perhaps he might, in his last metaphorical moments (after all, Mr. deBoer is not actually about to be ripped apart by Maenads) reflect that perhaps he chose unwisely when it came to his basic ideological operating paradigm. Or perhaps he might not. Not really my problem, either way. (more…)

Brit arrested for performing ‘Kung Fu Fighting.’

…Wait.  What?

Pub singer arrested for racism after Chinese passers-by hear him perform Kung Fu Fighting

…and that’s pretty much the article, right there.  Jimmie Bise (who is on Hot Air duty this week) approves on aesthetic grounds (the guy who got arrested is a keytar player*), but not on freedom of expression ones.  Personally, I’m happy to have a written Constitution with a reasonably rock-solid freedom-of-speech clause… yes, yes, I’m sure that you have seven billion outrageously outraged (to quote Hot Air again) examples otherwise.  Still, I can put this up:

…without worrying about a knock on the door.
