Some very sad news about Mary Katharine Ham’s husband.

Jake Brewer was killed in a car accident during a charity event yesterday.  I never met Jake, but Mary Katharine’s a friend, a good person and a crackerjack writer: my prayers and condolences to her and her family and loved ones.  It’s a tough thing, what’s happening to her right now.

Tanker full of Scotch crashes, explodes in NJ. #NOOOOOOOOOOO….

DO NOT WANT.

Tanker truck carrying 6,000 gallons of Scotch overturns, catches fire on New Jersey road

Commuters traveling this week on the Garden State Parkway may find themselves saying “l’chaim” as they drive past Woodbrige.

If there’s a fragrance of whiskey mixed with diesel fuel in the air, that’s because a tanker truck filled with 6,000 gallons of Scotch overturned on Tuesday, spilled its load and then caught fire on King Georges Road in the Fords section.

Oh, God. The humanity. The humanity.

I’m still here.

Eight years ago, somebody tried to kill me. And if you were in America at the time of the attacks, they tried to kill you, too. The people who committed that outrage made no secret of their desire to see us all dead; and I take them at their word. They hate and fear us, and they want us to die screaming. And they succeeded in killing far too many innocents.

Not much room for nuance there – and at seventh and last, there are two possible emotional reactions to that kind of hate; fear, or anger. I chose ‘anger.’ Because 9/11 was an outrage, not a tragedy.  And there’s not much else to say about that.

Except that I’m still here, and so are you.

PS: Don’t bother giving a lecture on a Third Way: it doesn’t exist. Anger, or fear. Pick one.
