VP Cheney’s federalist approach to same-sex marriage.

It’s a crying shame that we have a President who isn’t as willing to be progressive on this issue as either Dick Cheney, or myself:

Essentially, he favors it, but he wants to let the states decide how to best approach the marriage issue. This is a perfectly acceptable strategy to me, as you all know: I just wish that it was acceptable to the White House. Or anything definitive on the issue, really.

Needing to choose one of two indy Cthulhu films.

So, I have a Lovecraftian quandary.

There’s a little extra cash available right now – enough to pick up a movie. So I went looking for that Tori Spelling Cthulhu that I’ve been thinking of picking up… and found this: The Call of Cthulhu: The Celebrated Story by H.P. Lovecraft

It’s a tough call. I do actually like stupid, which is a draw for the former; but the latter has better reviews, even though it’s apparently a silent film. Does anyone who has seen either or both have an opinion?

Andrew Cuomo still not running for NY Governor.

If the last month should have done anything, it should have caused NY State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to at least re-evaluate his decision not to challenge current Governor David Paterson for the job.  Since then, Paterson’s numbers have stayed awful: 19% from Marist, 28% from Quinnipac, 18% from Siena.  The consensus is that Giuliani beats Paterson; Cuomo beats Paterson; and that Cuomo beats Giuliani.  The situation for Paterson is in fact so bad that his own consituents would rather have their old governor back right now, and their old governor has a name for liking to choke prostitutes*.

And yet, Cuomo won’t run.

Governor David Paterson won’t get challenge from Andrew Cuomo

Primary fights are great for Democrats, state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo asserts.

And no, he insisted again Sunday, he has no plans to challenge Gov. Paterson.

Either Cuomo really doesn’t want the job, or he’s quietly worried about any Democrat’s chances in 2010.  Given the nature of the economy in general and New York’s in particular, there may be something to that last worry – and if so, it’s something to consider when trying to decide how doomed the Republican Party is in the Northeast.

*Which is why he won’t be running again, rehabilitation dreams to the contrary.  The editorial cartoons draw themselves.

When did garbage like this become acceptable? [UPDATED]

Via Amander Carpenter’s Twitter, “this” being a list of ten conservative women that a Playboy Forum author would like to “hate-“… I’m not going to finish that term. Amanda’s on the list, which makes this a rather personal insult for her; but it’s plenty ugly on its own.

You know, when I was a Democrat – and reading Playboy, might I add – the magazine would have rather gnawed off a leg than offer this level of misogyny to women, in any medium that sported their corporate logo. What the hell happened?

PS: There’s a rather obvious omission, by the way. Probably because this Guy Cimbalo person is too scared of her husband stopping by and kicking his ass.

On the bright side, the President’s speech did not reference SkyNet.

Rob Rosenberger is perilously close to becoming my new guru…

…with this title and subtitle alone:

Obama (!) spouts an urban legend in his cybersecurity speech
…and we’ll achieve cyber superiority with the space alien technology we’ve been hiding at Area 51

(Via Hot Air) Although I’m sure that I’d find something about him to dislike, or he’d find something about me to dislike. That being said: the above 2009 mockery is as nothing to the 2008 mockery that it draws from – and as we all know, there is no mockery like the mockery of people who work in the field of computers*.  Not that Vmyths and BOFH are related, although they probably read each other.

*Wow. They should consider doing reprints.

Breaking: Mahmoud Abbas claims USA committed to ending West Bank settlements.

Is this correct, Mr. President?

A simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ will do.

‘Obama committed to ejecting Jews from Judea-Samaria,’ says Abbas

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday told reporters in Cairo that he is convinced that US President Barack Obama is firmly committed to finally ejecting the Jews from Judea and Samaria.

Abbas spoke to the press after briefing Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on his visit to the White House late last week, during which Obama apparently agreed with his guest that existing Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria must not even be allowed to experience “natural growth.”

(Via Fausta) While I am willing to believe that there may have been either a breakdown in communications somewhere – or that yet another Palestinian leader is willfully never missing a chance to miss a chance – there needs to be some clarification on this issue. Israel is not going to even freeze settlements in the West Bank, let alone dismantle them.  Meanwhile, the Palestinians apparently expect that the settlements will be removed, because that’s what the USA has decided to do.  The two positions cannot be reconciled.  This really does need to be addressed: if the President goes to Cairo without everybody involved already knowing precisely where his administration stands on this issue, the President’s Cairo speech will fail.  And by ‘fail’ I mean ‘start up another round of violence.’

Which will not be the President’s intent, but that won’t matter.
