Bad news on Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Apparently, it’s good.

It’s really, really good, in ways that push all of my buttons when it comes to RPGs, plus the buttons that I presume would get pushed by a MMO, thus putting it absolutely, totally, dangerously into DO NOT BUY THIS GAME IF YOU WISH TO REMAIN A FUNCTIONAL MEMBER OF SOCIETY territory.

But I knew that after I saw the trailer last year:

    1. I don’t do non-Good alignments, HR. The closest that I got to that was in Witcher 1/2, and even then I was running around saving people from mobs.

  1. Don’t watch the new intro trailer.

Jedi Knight with his partner’s dual-blade lightsaber in one hand, and his saber in the other.

  2. Maybe a lawful-evil Sith?

In any case, PA’s review implies to me that it’s essentially a massively-singleplayer or small group game, at least til you hit level-cap.

I have a recommendation for you, btw. Try to talk your wife into a one night a week play, and talk a few friends (whatever the group size is, haven’t heard that for sure), and play once a week, leveling as a group. It’s the most fun way to experience these games I think, and if you’re trying to stay the same level as other folks it’ll keep you from playing outside that time. On your main anyways. Alts are a different story… πŸ™‚

  3. Well, cool. I’m definitely PvE and my adult gaming group is (at least starting out) going to be Republic, so maybe we’ll see you around? πŸ™‚

  4. oh well. Old Republic will be my first, and possibly my last. I am both excited and fearful, as I should be.

  5. I quit World of Warcraft because of the mind-numbing tedium of Select Target – Spam Skills – Wait for Skills to Refresh – Spam Skills – MOB Dies. Repeat pattern.

This game (based on the gameplay examples I have seen on the ‘tubes) is essentially the same. So, if you like your ranged guys with blasters standing about in the open and shooting stuff without cover mattering, cool. Rock on. I can’t stand it.

The story stuff looks really awesome though. I’m very very tempted to suffer the silly “we’re not WoW, (or Everquest, or DAOC, or etc, etc.) honest” mechanics just to explore the story. Heck, the story and quests in WoW kept me interested for years, so… I don’t like where this is heading.

My jury is still out on this one. If the combat was more like Tabula Rasa or Planetside, I’d be in like flint. Time will tell.

  6. Well, yeah, you’re not allowed them, that’s why you have to convince your wife she wants to play…
