#Obamacare Death Watch: Kathleen Sebelius and the sword of Damocles.

Sounds like an adventure novel title.

Normally this would be a sign that HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius would be out the door before Friday:

White House press secretary Jay Carney said Tuesday that President Obama still trusts Sebelius’s stewardship of his signature legislative achievement.

“The secretary does have the full confidence of the president,” Carney said during his daily press briefing.

…but as Instapundit has pointed out, Obama maybe doesn’t quite dare. Let’s just say that the President doesn’t have a problem with making a decision when it comes to a conflict between his own interests and the country’s interests, and leave it at that.

  1. The funny thing about the portal is they are trying to fix it with patches that then result in entirely new and entertaining glitches. If anyone involved in this mess had two brain cells to rub together they’d yank the disaster and try to do a rewrite and restructure. But they can’t because they just wasted two weeks preventing the GOP from saving their bacon. And to take it down now would be to admit they made a mistake. So I don’t believe they’ll act before April 15, 2014 hits and the screaming starts.

    1. This is a big site, it’s going to have to manage heavy throughput in bursts, it needs to have been designed from the ground up with that in mind.

I would suggest that Microsoft Windows NT is a .. reasonable proxy. Version 3.4something was when NT *started* being usable.. 4.1 was viable .. and it took *YEARS* from the start of NT to reach that.

The only way the government could have gotten this working faster would have been to outsource it to a company that already is in this business .. Amazon or Google.

      1. (on the upside, would outsourcing to Amazon mean Moe Lane could get bonus points for everyone who signs up through his site?)

  2. They don’t have much time to make a decision on what to do about the portal, they have had an 88% dropoff in traffic in the two weeks the portal has been up. If it were a private company running it they’d be looking at bankruptcy options right now. So I don’t think the shutdown will be hurting the Republicans going forward, i.e., “they tried to stop it before things got really bad.” And I consider 100 million people getting hit with the tax for not having insurance “really bad”. It won’t help the D’s in November that’s for sure.

  3. … Obama maybe doesn’t quite dare.

Barack Obama also has a problem standing up to strong women. He might fire Kathleen Sibelius, but only if Valerie Jarrett orders him to.

  4. Sounds like an adventure novel title.
