The Nation, stuck in hatus interruptus over Michael Sam.

This is kind of entertaining:

Michael-Sam

Ooh, that’s easy: we don’t give a sh*t!

Now zip up your pants, The Nation.  You ain’t having your Special Time over this one.

  1. I’m getting a little annoyed at the left for pushing this as the sports story of the century. Frankly I find it to barely even be a story. I say that as a member of the conservative fundamentalist Christian wing of the party.

    1. Indeed. This is a dog-bites-man story that the Left is trying desperately to turn into man-bites-dog.

  2. Who is Michael Sam? Oh, the NFL player who came out as gay.
    .
Jon Stewart is right on this one – Michael Sam would be fine if he’d only committed vehicular manslaughter, obstructed justice in a murder case, sexually assaulted female fans, screamed racial epithets at a concert, or ran a dog-fighting ring…

The NFL have very dirty paws when it comes to condoning actual criminal behavior, let them grow a non-steroid-shriveled pair and let this kid play.

    1. Uh, no. Michael Sam is a college player that is entering the draft. But he’s not the best defensive player on his team, or even the best defensive lineman on his team (that would be Kony Ealy). He’s a 3rd or 4th rounder, but the left is already beating the drum that if he isn’t taken in the first round it’s due to homophobia.

It was an open secret that he was gay, and his coaches knew offically for about 3 years, and he told his teammates at the team dinner a year ago (with wives and girlfriends in attendance, incidentally). All the reporters covering SEC football knew.

Jon Stewart, as usual, doesn’t know shit from wild honey by taste or smell. Nobody’s going to stop him from playing except maybe Michael Sam.

      1. What’s even sadder is that he only came out to his dad just before it was announced. And he did it by text message.

        1. That’s … actually pretty normal for people who are concerned about a parent who has “gotten physical” in the past.

Yes, there are studies and advice pages for “how to come out”.

      2. Seems to me, Phil, that you didn’t read what I paraphrased, and simply reacted to “Jon Stewart”.

The NFL has permitted genetically gifted individuals to badly misbehave. Any objections to drafting this kid need to be seen in that light.

        1. That said, a good many politically vocal people are damned fools, regardless of whether I agree with them at any given time, and there is no reason why this should affect this kid’s draft pick order.
          .
          In either direction.

          1. I can.

In most cases, I think it would push his pick down.
The players use a communal shower after practices and games, introducing an openly gay player into that situation has could cause unnecessary drama.
Secondarily, he’s likely a mid-round pick. Which means he’s likely (but not certain) to make the team. But he’s not likely to start, or even play that many snaps in his first year. As evidenced by the the reactions already, the sportswriters want him to be a star, an unquestioned starter, on the field every snap. And they’ll cause lots of unnecessary drama if this unrealistic wish is not fulfilled.
            .
That said, the reaction would be *highly* entertaining if he were drafted by the Redskins. I hope it happens.

  3. I’m getting a sense of deja vu on this. Wasn’t this covered about a year ago? Oh right, we already talked this one to death last year when Jason Collins, an NBA player, announced he was gay and SI and everyone talked about the issue then. The “curious silence” is from everyone wondering why this guy (who wrote a story on Jason Collins coming out incidentally) is asking questions to which we already have answers.
