In The Mail: Harry Turtledove’s Last Orders.

Came this morning; spent the afternoon reading it. Last Orders: The War That Came Early is probably the last book in a series that postulates an alternative Second World War that started over Czechoslovakia and not Poland; no spoilers, but as you can imagine the situation ended rather differently for everybody concerned.  Whether it was for the better – specifically, over the long term – was not resolved by the end of this book.

I liked the series,  but if this sounds interesting to you you should start with Hitler’s War: The War That Came Early, Book One.

  1. He’s darned good. Haven’t read this series yet. I’ll have to add it to the list.

    1. Looked at it, but there’s no way I’m going to pay more for an e-book than a paperback. I’ll check out the library instead.

      1. Why not? E-books are far more convenient than paper books, printing and shipping are a miniscule portion of the cost of producing a book, and the overwhelming majority of the price difference between a hardcover and a mass-market paperback edition is a price premium for getting the book earlier (printing a hardcover does not cost a lot more, and is still a small portion of the cost of producing the book). If you won’t pay more than paperback prices for e-books, then you pretty have to resign yourself to not buying e-books until the book is out in paperback.

        1. If you’re going to claim that printing, shipping, warehousing, and returns are a minuscule portion of the cost of producing a book, you’d better darned well provide some evidence to back up that extraordinary claim.
          .
Also note that the book *is* out in paperback.

  2. Just finished Book 1 a couple of nights ago. It’s pretty good (and does not indulge in the awkward sex scenes featuring famous historical figures that plagued the “How Few Remain” alternative timeline).
