Hurt, Johnny Cash

I meant to do a post on covers of songs that made the original singers just throw up their hands and go Fine. Just take the damn song, then.  This one would be at the top of most of the lists.

13 thoughts on “‘Hurt.’”

  1. Let’s start:
    Cake, “I Will Survive”.
    .
Fountains of Wayne, “Baby Hit Me One More Time”.
    .
“Weird Al” Yankovic, “Dare To Be Stupid”*.
    .
    * It’s good enough for Mark Mothersbaugh, it’s good enough for me.

    1. Dare to Be Stupid wasn’t a cover, but Al managed in one song to both condense the essence of DEVO and to surpass everything they ever did.

  2. The ultimate praise for a cover is when people don’t even realize there was an original version.
    My top three covers:
    3. They Might Be Giants, Istanbul (Not Constantinople)
    2. Janis Joplin, Me And Bobby McGee
And finally, the song Bob Dylan called Jimi’s song:
    1. Jimi Hendrix, All Along The Watchtower

    1. He knew it when he first heard it – “She stole my song!”

And he was right; you cannot hear that song any other way than Aretha sang it.

  3. Tori Amos-“Smells Like Teen Spirit”
Judas Priest-“Green Manalishi With the Two Prong Crown”
    Cascada-“Kids in America”

  4. Yes, Hurt would be #1.

A few good one mentioned up above. I would throw “Who Do You Love?” by George Thorogood in there too. The Ataris cover of Don Henley’s “Boys of Summer” is awesome as well, but I don’t know if it fits because it’s not a well known cover. Also The Band Perry’s cover of Glen Campbell’s “Gentle On My Mind” is fantastic.
