It does not *shock* me that Donald Trump is fundamentally wrong on eminent domain…

…but neither do I approve of his position in any way, shape, or form:

Look, I don’t want to spoil anybody’s fun: Donald Trump is one of those kinds of candidates that people go gaga over well before the real election cycle starts, and then the candidate goes away. I don’t expect him to end up harming the GOP, either. But I wouldn’t get too attached to Donald Trump, either. Because, honestly, getting Kelo v. New London wrong is not trivial. There is nothing particularly conservative OR Republican about state-sanctioned land theft; and at least one other Presidential candidate will be bringing this up at any debate that Donald Trump happens to attend, not least because people like me are going to tell them to.

I understand that the man likes to stir excrement, and I agree that doing so is useful. I’ve even been told, by people I trust, that Donald Trump is actually a rather nice person in private who treats his employees with respect. But his candidacy will end up breaking people’s hearts if they’re not careful.

  1. “But his candidacy will end up breaking people’s hearts if they’re not careful.”

The candidate that will do best will be the one that addresses the concerns of the different factions on the Right with respect instead of dismissing these concerns with varying degrees of disdain. While I do not like hearing the constant griping coming from the Right’s factions I do understand the frustration behind it – the belief that they are all being told to “shut-up and get in line” is there.

  2. If Donald Trump had his house seized by the government, he might well have a different Kelo position, which is extraordinarily dumb of him.

  3. The Trump thing is more proof that were living in the crazy years.
Also, it serves as more proof that a sizable percentage of the population are appallingly ignorant and proud of it.

But I must say, watching the clutching of pearls and the horrified screams of “You can’t say that!” is highly entertaining.
Especially since they can’t silence him, and they’re going to actually have to have a discussion that they clearly don’t want to.

And I don’t want to hear a fricking thing about how Hispanics are “natural conservatives”. I live in a community awash in them. They’re natural tribalists, many of whom have been steeped in Marxism for much of their lives. Calling them such reveals the speaker as willfully ignorant of conservatism and Latin America.

He’s entertaining at least, for now. I’m certainly getting a chuckle out of it.

    2. The funny thing is the people making that claim are the same ones that want to stop talking about the “culture wars” which fighting on social issues is really the only reason Latino’s might become “natural conservatives” and that’s assuming they take they’re Catholicism more seriously then the average American. No real proof of that considering the Democrats went hardcore anti-church and Latino’s still voted for them overwhelmingly.

  4. I don’t mind Trump getting Kelo wrong .. he’s in good company. Christie gets it wrong too, eh?

Perhaps it’s an East Coast thang?

  5. A) Trump’s a Dem so none of his positions really surprise me. The fact that he’s running in the Republican primary says a lot about what he thinks the Dems Chances are in 2016.
    B) Trump’s smart he correctly ID’d the anger at Republicans who run on getting tough on the border and then become amnesty squishes once elected.
    C) Trump is a master of media manipulation he correctly guessed that within a week or two of his statement there would be a crime committed by an illegal that would blow him off the front page. The sanctuary Cities controversy is probably just gravy as far as he’s concerned.
    D) Remember Trump is a master of nth dimensional socio-economic chess that’s how he has become who he is.
    E) Trump’s Achilles heel is his oikophobia that’s why there was more than a hint of racism in his statement. He really does have that low of an opinion of the average voter and it will probably end up killing his campaign sooner or later.
    F) Finally when he whines about how much money this campaign has cost him take it with a grain of salt. My guess is that before he started his run he probably insured all his company’s contracts with a non-American insurance company like Barclays with a strong non-disclosure clause probably with a double pay out if they disclosed the insurance policies existence.

    1. The main danger of Trump, for the rest of the field (including the eventual nominee…) is that any idea Trump espouses that they later glom onto will be used to tie them to Trump.
      .
Put another way, The Donald limits the number of parades they can rush over and get in front of…

    2. Donald Trump does not care what people say about him as long as they talk about him.

British Officer: “You’re the worst pirate I’ve ever heard of.
Capt. Sparrow: “But you’ve heard of me?”
