Great. We’re going to have an entry in the Olympics city selection, after all.

This is awful. Can the decision be appealed?

Seriously, having the Olympics is a boondoggle these days. An expensive, annoying boondoggle. I’d be just as happy if it stayed out of the USA for a while. Besides: it’s no fun without the Soviets to beat.

  1. Why so pessimistic? Lets remember that the US is one of the only countries that ever manages to run the games in a responsible manner. And given that LA is the poster child of a profitable Olympics, it makes sense to try there.

    1. Not anymore. The IOC insists on all-new facilities for everything. One reason LA ’84 was profitable was because they used a lot of existing facilities.

  2. The most important thing about the LA Games is that they be carbon neutral! Also there should be high speed rail between the venues and the venues themselves should reflect the rich cultural, ethnic and sexual diversity of southern California. Is Ciatlyn Jenner available for the lighting ceremony?

  3. Ah, I wouldn’t worry about it. Get Obama to lobby the IOC, and Los Angeles will be out in the first round of voting, just like Chicago. (Fun fact: I live a mile away from Washington Park, where the Chicago games would have been. My dad works for an engineering firm which would have gotten a whoooooole lot of work out of the games, so I was kind of ambivalent about losing them, but really I’m sure it’s all for the best.)

  4. No kidding, it’s an economic mill-stone place around the lucky winner’s neck, dragging them down for at least 20 years.

  5. As a resident of Massachusetts within 20 miles of Boston proper, all I can say is:

    BWUAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

We dodged that bullet. Oh, did we ever….

  6. So, L.A. .. a rather broke city in California .. a rather broke State .. is going to borrow lots of money?
    .
Where do they propose to get enough rich suckers for that?

    1. Hollywood? They’re dumb enough to pony up for the glam.
      .
OTOH, Are we sure California will still be part of the Union at that point? I’m very close to saying Mexico can just take it back no questions asked.

      1. How much of Cali, though? Redding is .. not awful.
        .
(and should be the capitol for the State of Jefferson .. sometimes jokingly referred to as the State of Hemptopia)

    2. LA would have to build far less new stuff for an Olympics than most cities, and far less off what was built would be one-offs never to be used again (due to the large number of professional and high-level college teams in the city). Since it offers insufficient opportunities for graft, LA will not get the bid.
