  1. Bah. All campaigns eventually end in death, why drag it out?

OK, a slightly more serious take.
I run sandbox, so I either don’t retcon, or I retcon every time a character makes a decision, depending on how you look at it.
At the beginning, I throw out a bunch of themes disguised as plot hooks. Whichever ones the PCs bite on, are what the campaign is “about”, for as long as they stick with the theme.

Of course, I’ll regularly supply moral quandaries to see how committed they are to the theme they’ve chosen, and provide them frequent choices to stay on theme or chase another wild hare.
If you’re decisive, make a character with a strong personality, and you know what types of stories you like, you’ll love my games.
If you want to enjoy a fantasy of power while taking the path of least resistance, you’ll hate them with a passion. (As your character accomplishes nothing and dies in a bed of his own making.)

Because I work in themes instead of plots, the players make their own railroad. If they derail, it doesn’t really affect me. “You failed to save the king from assassination. The heir escaped. The conspirators know who you are. What are you going to do?”

  2. I have complimented authors for *not* retcon’ing even when it’s obvious that they *should* have ..
