Of course everybody rightly praises Brian Wilson for his later masterpieces such as Pet Sounds and Smile. But even this early stuff is praiseworthy. Who else at this point was a self-sustaining band, with internal songwriter, playing their own instruments and singing all the parts–AND producing themselves? Nobody, that’s who.
