This new “Cars 3” trailer reminds me of an anecdote.

So, first, Cars 3 trailer. Anecdote afterward.

Back in the day – more than a decade ago? Really?  – anyway, I was at some political conference or other with the rest of the RedState crew and we were going through what political conferences painfully consider to be ‘vendor rooms.’  God, but those things were nightmarish. Literally, in the sense that everything was just off and wrong and didn’t have anything that I consider to be necessary parts of a vendor room.

Anyway, NASCAR was there, and they had set up a race car simulation.  One of the other RS guys was a huge NASCAR fan, and he understood the tracks and knew all the lore, and of course we had kind of privileged access to everything there so we all got to try it after hours.  So my buddy goes in, and comes out with something like the best score for the day there. So naturally, I took that as a challenge.

As I understand it, it was not actually impossible to manipulate the simulation to turn a car around and make it go backwards on that particular track for any length of time. It was merely very difficult – but, as I said: I took the whole thing as a challenge. The look on the attendant’s face was a curious mixture of emotions which I have still not deciphered, all these years later.  Although that may have been my asking him if there was any way to unlock machine guns on the cars.  Which I still think was a reasonable question.  I mean, shoot, wouldn’t you have put that in?

  1. Seeing as firearms were stock on proto-NASCAR rum runners, that’s almost a requirement. If they added target shooting to modern racing, I’d totally tune in.

  2. Pretty sure that Dueltrack mentioned that the racing types of cars in 2034 were unarmed because the race fans were purists or some such reason. You’d have to go to one of those weird oval tracks for the MGs. And as a duelist, would you even start accelerating on those? You’re just letting folks shoot at your rear arc that way, and who puts weapons back there? The race tracks ban dropped weapons and about the only design with actual guns in the rear arc that I can think of was the Hotshot.
