Leonardo DiCaprio as the Joker?

That’s what the fever swamp rumor mill is suggesting: “Sources say Warners will make an ambitious attempt to use [Martin] Scorsese to bring Leonardo DiCaprio into the world of comic-book movies.” The idea is that Scorsese and DiCaprio work together a lot, and thus having the one might entice the other to play the Joker for Scorsese’s DC Comics art film*.  Apparently this would not replace Jared Leto in DCU continuity, which will either please you or sadden you, depending.

I dunno about this one.  DiCaprio can, you know, act: and he’s looking a bit like Jack Nicholson with the smile in the picture at this link. Certainly Jared Leto’s Joker was a bit of a disappointment, although perhaps not by any fault of Leto’s (Suicide Squad is a frustrating movie, because you can see the amazingly good one that lies underneath it). But maybe I’m still not getting over the fact that I could write ‘DC Comics art film’ and not be sarcastic.  It really does feel like the superhero genre of movies is gonna crest soon, if it hasn’t already.  And many people are ready to tell me that it has.

*Yes, we live in that sort of world, now.  It’s very exciting.  And feels much like a bubble.

  1. I am amazed by this direction. DCEU apologists will swear up and down that the DCEU is better than MCU, but you don’t see the MCU trying to create alt-MCU movies.

What WB is currently thinking is well beyond me. I’d give my right nut to figure it out.
