Spell: Ant Ball.

Ant Ball

It is a rather interesting missile spell, honestly: when cast, it produces a ball of writhing, live ants (about ten thousand or so).  If the Ant Ball is thrown and hits its target, the target suddenly is covered in ants — this absolutely will at least stun or confuse anybody who is not both covered in fully sealed armor and possessed of nerves of steel.  If the Ant Ball instead hits suitable ground, the ants will magically sink into the dirt and instantly create a viable colony, complete with a queen.  Note that the ants summoned are not particularly dangerous, poisonous, aggressive, and/or eldritch: they are simply ants. They also stick around until they die of natural causes (or being stepped on); again, they are simply ants.

Ant Ball was first created as a joke, but there are many magicians who swear by it. As combat spells go, it’s surprisingly effective (at least, for special or covert operations).  Being suddenly covered with ants turns out to be an excellent way to disrupt a spellcaster or anybody else trying to concentrate, while still defaulting to being distinctly nonlethal. Plus, the spell doesn’t leave behind any sort of magically-poisonous residue; if you miss with Ant Ball, all you’ve done is create an anthill. This can be important, later.

  1. Coming from a place there the default ants are fire ants, my mental image of this spell is probably even more effective than you were going for.
