My mini-review (it’s awesome) of ‘Shazam!’

Short version… Whew.

Slightly longer version: fairly hard to discuss, for reasons. But the fear that I had — that Shazam! would disparage the source material — was absolutely unfounded. I had a grand time. If DC would keep making movies like this then everything is fine and there’s no need to change things up and did I mention that it’s all good the way it is?

One other note: trying to compare this movie to, say, Captain Marvel is ridiculous. The two films had different jobs, different styles, different themes, and were trying to accomplish two different goals. All they share is a name and that’s not a reflection on either film. I liked Shazam! better because I was raised largely DC, that’s all. It’s personal when I assess how a movie treated a DC character, and I just don’t have that reaction for any Marvel character who isn’t Spider-man or the Fantastic Four.

  1. I forgot they were doing an early showing tonight; at 7:02 I happened to check showtimes at a local theater to see they had a showing…in 8 minutes. Grrr.

  2. I am slightly annoyed at a costume color. I shall say no more since spoilers and not mention that it’s about Zazzo.

And continuing the spoiler-free ness, while I’m happy to see the actor playing the bad guy again, I’d have preferred him to be in his *other* role. But that is apparently not to be.

Also, it seems that the 1973 Shazam series is not on comixology, which is unfortunate because I’d like to read some of the 100 page giants again.

  3. It falls just under Awesome for me. While I liked the adherence to canon, I felt the humor was overplayed (I lost some interest during the fight in the mall, for example). And the third act was flashy but Billy felt lost in the crowd by the end of it.
Good, yes. Awesome? Agree to disagree, there.

    1. That’s cool, man. People like different things. Really, the important thing here is It Did Not Suck and thus waste your money.
