The COWBOY BEBOP Honest Trailer.

I’ve actually never seen COWBOY BEBOP. Is it any good? And is it better in the original?

I also wonder if Honest Trailers had another video lined up but had to switch it out for this at the last second. I mean, this is really an Honest TV Trailer, right?

  1. Cowboy Bebop is uneven. Unlike most anime series, it’s primarily episodic. There are character arcs. But aside from not having a clue who any of the characters are, a new viewer could pick a random episode and jump right in (with the exception of a couple of two-parters scattered throughout the series). Some of the episodes aren’t particularly good. For instance, the first episode is rather meh. The second one is better. The third and fourth episodes are once again each better than the preceding episodes.

And then you reach the fifth episode, “Ballad of Fallen Angels”, which is excellent, and makes you realize that you really want to watch the rest of this series.

There’s some pretty clever stuff in this series. For instance, in one of the episodes, the crew ends up literally going on a spelunking expedition through an ancient mall, looking for a video tape player. Some of the episodes are a bit silly. Some of them are pretty serious. And while you won’t enjoy some of the episodes, some of them are *really* good.

I haven’t seen it in English, as I’m a bit of a subtitles snob. So I can’t compare dub vs sub for you.

Also, Yoko Kano did the music. And as with most of the stuff she’s composed, it’s very good.

    1. Mostly agree..

I disagree in two parts. The music is beyond “very good” and into “excellent”. It’s not on par with, say, Thelonious Monk, but it’s good.

The characters have arcs .. but they’re subtle. Surprisingly subtle for anime.

It’s good. It’s not ‘Gatchaman’ or ‘Bleach’… and that is also good.

  2. It’s a good show. Excellent soundtrack. I can’t say if the dub’s better than the sub, as I watched it on Adult Swim.

  3. I can’t say anything about the anime but the manga was OK. Based on that I’d say that Honest Trailers got it right. Quirky bountyhunters in a near future setting where we’ve settled the inner Solar System. I remember a fan rumor that the series ended on a dark note but I’ve no way of knowing how true that is or isn’t. @_@

  4. The Honest Trailer actually pretty much nails it. It’s a show about a motley crew of bounty hunters and a dystopian interplanetary future.

Also, Tank! is the theme song, and it’s awesome.
