I’m in that dangerous stage of video game boredom.

You know: the one where I don’t care about any of the one billion games I’ve already got on Steam, Epic, Orgin, GOG, Bethesda, and Uplay and start wondering about new time-sinks. In related news: how’s Tropico 6? GOG’s having a sale on the previdammit I just bought Sid Meier’s Pirates.

  1. I know that feeling. I just finished Dragon Quest XI, which has a whole other game you can only play after you finish it, which lets you fight the true villain and find good endings for many of the plot threads that ended in tragedy the first time around. I just spent 160 hours on that game–I ought to play a short one next. But short, sweet action games like Control only make me stress out with their jump scares, and don’t really scratch my RPG itch. It’s Pathfinder: Kingmaker next for me, I think, now that they’ve added a turn-based mode. And I’ve got Witcher 3 queued up once work calms down enough for me to get fully engrossed.

But if you want a suggestion, I recommend Person 4 Golden: half JRPG, half social sim, and only $20 on Steam. Although it’s worth checking out the guides on how to get the true ending before you get the “good but not best” one. I made that mistake on Person 5 Royal (only available on PlayStation at the moment).

  2. Might I recommend Xbox Game Pass to you? It’s Microsoft’s subscription service. $1 for the first month, $4.99 a month after that for PC. Allows you to download, well, anything you want from their current lineup of stuff. The New Microsoft Flight Simulator. The Age of Empires remasters. Age of Wonders Planetfall. Crusader Kings 3. (Oh wow. downloading) Battletech. Fallout 76. Dragon Quest X1. Gears. Halo. Mechwarrior. Forza. Shadows of War. That Munchkin game that plays like Gauntlet. Ori. OOTP 21. Phoenix Point. RE7. Stellaris. Slay the Spire. Surviving Mars. Bard’s Tale IV. Wasteland 2 and 3. And a bunch of stuff I skipped over. It’s an amazingly good deal, especially for stuff that you’d just like to play for a while and not keep.

And for Tropico, the general rule of thumb I hear is “play the ones before the current one.” So maybe do IV or V before 6.

  3. I liked the reboot of Sid Meier’s Pirates. It kept a lot of the feel of the original, but with improved graphics. The dancing mini-game is still cheesy, though. I played Tropico 1 a lot, and Tropico 2 (Pirate Cove) even more – that’s my favorite of the franchise. Spent a bit of time with T4, but I drifted away fairly from it and never moved to the newer releases.

I’ve been spending a lot of time with Factorio lately – managing supply chains and maximizing efficiency shouldn’t be that fun. I’m also still playing with Kerbal Space Program, although I spend most of my time these days working on a mod for it instead of outright playing it.

  4. Titanfall 2 is still the best FPS of this generation, and has an excellent story as well as incredible gameplay.
If you go into multiplayer, prepare to die. A lot. The movement system is insane, and there are players who have spent years mastering it. (Not to mention map knowledge.) Respawns are practically instantaneous, though. And spawn campers practically nonexistent. So hold forward, get vertical, and go nuts. It’s about as non-toxic as online games get. (Just don’t camp with a spitfire and invis, or the whole lobby will declare vendetta.)

I recall you were interested in Prey, but don’t recall if you played it. It’s very good.
About the only negative it has, are that the menus are a bit wonky. Going into them can break the flow of the game and your level of immersion, but doing so is necessary.

If you like stealth, and haven’t played Dishonored, correct that.
Make sure you play the DLC afterwards, the Rashomon effect is in play, and makes the setting and story much more competing.
Give the sequel a pass. It demystifies The Outsider and that’s a total buzzkill.
