At least the parents found out about the flaw in their security before it led to Bad Things. I was laughing at the end, though – closing the gate behind them was not something I was expecting.

As an uncle and granduncle, I think your use of the word “terrifying” is entirely appropriate.
Terrifying is right, those things are supposed to keep them out of danger!
