Not-cows!

It’s not true that you can see a not-cow herd from orbit. I mean, sure, you can see anything from orbit if your camera’s good enough. But you need to be pretty far down the gravity well before you can see the smashed trees and churned-up ground.

“You eat those?” Oft found them horrifying and fascinating, which is fair. I’d love to meet the joker who decided to name them ‘not-cows.’ Because people who’ve never seen one tend to think that they probably look bovine, and the name is just there to remind everybody that they’re not actually cows. Which is… well, that’s not even wrong.

“Just their legs,” I said. “Well, they’re sort of legs. Anyway, they don’t mind; the legs pop off anyway. It’s good for them. See how none of ‘em are above twenty feet tall? That’s how you can tell if a herd’s not being harvested regularly.”
