Look, I might as well stop pretending that this isn’t relevant to my readers.
There’s been more people withdrawing from the SPSFC, in light of the thing that happened. While I never actually wanted to get more book sales out of simply saying Please remove my book from consideration (it’s like being thanked for not spitting in the baptismal font), it happened – and I’m fortunate. I have an audience already. Heck: I knew I was almost certainly not passing the first checkpoint.
Some of these folks were under different circumstances. I also know that my regular readers here want this information. So here goes: the other people I know of who withdrew from the contest. Or, in Eriksen’s case, tossed. People thinking about buying one of my books should at least take a look through this list instead.
- Devon Eriksen, Theft of Fire.
- Gregory Michael, Chloe’s Kingdom.
- G.S. Jennsen, The Thief: A Cosmic Shores Novel.
- C.R. Walton, Wilderness Five.
- Zachary Forbes, Slipspace: Terra Nullius.
- Steve Gavin, Cosmic Strife: Assault
…I really wish none of this had ever happened.
I feel this offers something useful while staying classy about the circumstances and events. Thanks, Moe.
The more I hear of this the more it reads like a cheap remake of the corruption of the Hugos, which now have a much relevance as the Oscars – meaning to be awarded one is not a sign of quality or achievement but rather of political approval. This doubles as a negative indicator.
Anecdote and not data:
In the last 11 years I’ve seen 2 of the best picture winners ( parasite & shape of water)
In the 11 years before that I only missed two (chicago & crash)
In the prior 11, I only missed the English patient.
Hollywood changed, and not for the better. So has publishing.
Well, to paraphrase (poorly) an old saying: you may not want to talk about politics, but politics wants to talk about you.
I had heard of Eriksen prior to this, but I hadn’t paid any attention to him – I scrolled through his X feed and I can’t find anything that seems to me to warrant any particular angst, much less banning him from a competition.
Downloaded the Amazon sample from Eriksen and it’s good. I probably won’t buy it today, but it’s likely going to be a weekend read.
Might want to pop these up in the book of the week thread as honorable mentions or something.
