  1. With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa by E B Sledge.

Powerful and human, ignoring the broad strokes of history for one man’s personal experience.

  2. After that first suggestion, you’re going to need something lighter.

Dungeon Crawler Carl. It’s fun and frequently funny as hell.
The Earth is turned into a mega dungeon of death, run by an AI that’s rapidly going rogue, the survivors have to navigate it to survive, their attempts to stay alive are streamed across the Galaxy for the entertainment of the masses.
Enter Carl, and his ex-girlfriend’s cat. If they can survive long enough, they might just bring the whole oppressive system down.
So far there are seven books in the series. I burned through them in just over a week.

    1. YES. I completely agree, and highly recommend this series.

The author, Matt Dinniman, is getting better as a writer as the series goes on. This does not always happen, especially in LitRPG.

(The other LitRPG series I would recommend are two by C. J. Carella: the Eternal Journey, a six- novel series, and Godkiller Mode, a trilogy set in the same multiverse. None of the other LitRPG books or series I have tried have held my interest. YMV.)
