I mean, I thought the original story was pretty dumb, too – THE LONG WALK is a first-ever novel; and boy, does it ever show – but what do I know? I’m not the one who had his trunk novel turned into a major motion picture, after all. Still… it’s not just me, right? This is pretty cookie-cutter, don’t you think?

I liked the story when I read it as a teen and am a bit surprised it took so long to get an adaptation, and the less fantastical King’s works, the better they seem to translate to film, so I’ll give it a chance.
It’d like it better without Mark Hamill, though. He blew all his goodwill supporting Rian Johnson.
Seems pointless after Hunger Games/Squid Games. What is the attraction? No use getting invested in the characters when only one can survive, just watching to see if there are any creative deaths. Will give Hamill credit for his role in the House of Usher
Don’t forget Battle Royale!
The Hunger Games Endurance Challenge doesn’t look that interesting to me. I think it would be more interesting if there could be more than one winner and they actually had someplace to go, and the soldiers were there to protect them from something sinister, but the soldiers only go as far as half their fuel will take them.
I suppose I might watch it if I found it on Paramount Plus.
Lest I fanboy to hard for something I haven’t read in half a lifetime, I recall The Long Walk as being the prototype for Reality TV (Along with The Running Man in it’s non-Arnold printed version), and it was Pure. No sympathy, no storyline crafting, no judges, just a simple set of rules, impartially and brutally enforced, until a winner emerged. It’s Squid Games without the alliances and mystery; a race where the only competition is yourself.
Yeah, this is dumb. But it’s getting made because they can spin it as “just like Hunger Games, except not in any legally binding way” and also have Stephen King’s name on it.
Budget is reportedly $5 mil (can that actually be right?) so it’s not going to need to sell a huge amount of tickets to make some bank.
