The obligatory ‘What the HELL, Syfy?’ Banana Splits trailer.

Come, I will conceal nothing from you: my first reaction to a Banana Splits horror flick came right out of Dark Humor. But there are people who are legitimately upset about this, and I can’t say that they’re wrong, either. Lots of people like to say that a particular movie is wrecking your childhood, but very few of those flicks are actually trying to do that:

Off to see MiB: International.

Figured it out; will see MiB: International today, and Shaft on Father’s Day. I even have enough credits to get a free ticket, and maybe they’ll upgrade my popcorn or something because it’s a dad holiday and I’m a dad. Or not. The movie theaters do give out quirky little specials for this reason or that, but you can’t really expect them on cue. Or for the specials to make all that much sense.

I hope the movies don’t suck!

The ‘Doctor Sleep’ teaser trailer.

Sequel to The Shining, and… Doctor Sleep is certainly aware of the name ‘Stanley Kubrick.’

It’s based on the book, which I might have read? I don’t remember, actually. Stephen King and I have a complicated relationship: I liked him a lot better when he was writing books that were thumbs in the eyes of the same people who he’s since decided to ah, curry favor with. But that’s irrelevant to the issue at hand, I suppose. This doesn’t look wretched, but I have to wonder whether it can support the weight. More from the movie side of it than from the book side, of course.

The conundrum: Shaft, or MiB International?

They both come out on the same day, you see. Both have their points; I want to see both, but realistically I’m not going to see both. The MiB franchise is shaky (to be polite about it); this latest Shaft offering may be a little too deferential to the modern era’s sensibilities. Or maybe not (do not click that link to the trailer at work, or in front of small children, or your mother).

Crud: I had half-talked myself into MiB International while writing this. Now I’m back on the damn fence again. Maybe I should be trying to figure out how to finesse this…

The Captain Marvel Honest Trailer.

It’s very insightful — which is to say, it matched my opinion of the movie. I never thought that Captain Marvel was actually bad for what it was, which was a Marvel origin story. It occurs to me that that’s the problem that most Marvel origin stories had: they’re only origin stories, instead of the ‘superhero + something else’ model that the best MCU flicks have*.

Original X-Men animation studio wants to start it all up again. …So say we* all.

Alas, this story about the folks behind the original X-Men animated show planning to pitch a revival to Disney isn’t nearly as awesome as I thought it was when I clicked ‘Add New’ in this site’s dashboard. Don’t get me wrong: the idea of a revived X-Men animated show, same format (but updated, of course), same story-lines? Awesome. So is the news that the studio’s gonna make that pitch. But them actually doing it would be the super-extra-awesome thing that I was going to write about.
