Now this is what I call good, thorough – and above all, comprehensive – sucking up by The Daily Beast:

President Romney? He’d Have to Thank Obama for Improving Picture

It’s way too early to say who the next president will be. But even now, in June, we can already predict at least one outcome of November’s election: if Mitt Romney ends up winning the White House, he will have a better shot at success than many of his presidential predecessors—and he will have Barack Obama to thank for the leg up.

This is how you do it, folks. This is how you kiss a politician’s rear end when you don’t even know which Presidential posterior you’ll end up be puckering up for. It’s almost Platonic in its purity. If you’re in Team Obama, you get so many warm fuzzies about being told how awesome your President was in turning an admittedly frightening yet decidedly temporary economic meltdown into the Great Recession that you hopefully won’t notice that The Daily Beast is figuring that your guy has an excellent chance at being a one-termer; and if you’re on Team Romney you’re going to be so pleased at having a Lefty site treat Romney as being worth sucking up to that you maybe won’t realize that they’re effectively announcing that they’re sucking up to what they think is an empty suit. Tell me you’re surprised.

Three out-of-state men arrested in a Bridgeport apartment raid days before the NATO summit were charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism, providing material support for terrorism and possession of an explosive or incendiary device, their attorney and police said early Saturday.

The arrests were the result of a month-long investigation into a group suspected of making Molotov cocktails — crude bombs usually created by filling glass bottles with gasoline, according to law enforcement sources and police records obtained by the Tribune.

Because I think – and interestingly enough, I think that Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) thinks – that the President may be just a little bit, ah, reluctant to get on the court with somebody with absolutely no reservations whatsoever about beating him.

(Via Hot Air Headlines) The hysterical part of all of this is that when I saw the title of this WaPo article – “Toss out the all-volunteer military” – I immediately said to myself  …because this suckweasel thinks that the problem with our military is that it is far too good at killing people and breaking stuff.  And, lo!

Since the end of the military draft in 1973, every person joining the U.S. armed forces has done so because he or she asked to be there. Over the past decade, this all-volunteer force has been put to the test and has succeeded, fighting two sustained foreign wars with troops standing up to multiple combat deployments and extreme stress.

This is precisely the reason it is time to get rid of the all-volunteer force. It has been too successful. Our relatively small and highly adept military has made it all too easy for our nation to go to war — and to ignore the consequences.

“Ignoring the consequences,” by the way, is Center for a New American Security suckweasel-speak for “doesn’t fight wars according to the diktats of the Center for a New American Security.”  Its author (Tom Ricks) is also probably smarting just a touch from a certain embarrassment: which is to say, he had the misfortune to write a book published in 2006 called Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq just before the Surge came along and un-Fiascoed everything.  Doubling down with his 2009 work The Gamble: General David Petraeus and the American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2006-2008 probably didn’t help his digestion, either, given that (according to Wikipedia, at least*) Ricks apparently doubled down on the gloom and doom.  Weird how the WaPo didn’t mention that in his bio… oh, I just slay me, sometimes. #rsrh An excellent Fast & Furious review.

If you don’t have time to read it, let me summarize: Eric Holder’s Justice Department’s attempts to utterly stonewall Congress’s investigation of Operation Fast & Furious has been done in a fashion that would, if done by any organization not aligned with the Obama administration, result in a series of raids and subpoenas by the Justice Department.  The entire structure is rotten, from the top down, and Congress is rapidly approaching the point where criminal contempt citations of top officials (including the Attorney General) will be issued.  Historically, that’s the point where the executive branch throws in its cards and goes along with the legislative branch.

But let me add this: I am not actually confident that Attorney General Holder and President Obama realize that they’re over a barrel, here.  I know that a lot of people have been impatiently waiting for this story to hit the front page, stinks and all, but good scandals take time to ferment.  If Congress is going to issue contempt citations because the Justice Department won’t give up documents, and if the administration lets them go through with it, there is absolutely no way that the media won’t go on a full-court press about the Attorney General being held in contempt by Congress.  And before anybody thinks that this will be a net positive for the administration, let me remind you of something: people died because of administration incompetence, and the administration then tried to cover it up.  That makes this particular scandal quite a bit different than just about every other Washingtonian scandal of the last forty years.

The DOOM that came to Obamacare.

So. We move on. 

Gallup did a poll on Obamacare (news flash: people still aren’t supporting it), and came up with (among other things) this fascinating result:

That, folks, is about as close to a consensus among the American people as you’re likely to get on health care: the majority of the population thinks that the government does not have the right to force you to buy health insurance.  And that includes ‘a majority of Democrats’ and ‘a majority of people who like the idea of Obamacare.’  If I was working for this administration, I’d be praying right now that the Supreme Court strikes down the individual mandate; because if it’s still in place in November – and if this poll is accurate – then there’s going to be a lot of people out there who will be aware that the Republican nominee – whoever that is – will have explicitly campaigned on repealing it…
