Apple e-books forced to make it rain for Amazon customers.

Well, at least make it drizzle a little: “On Wednesday, Amazon sent out another installment of payments relating to its “Apple eBooks Antitrust Settlement”—except this time, it was to settle related lawsuits brought by a group of state-level attorneys general.” I got a little bit less than eight and a half bucks, which I’m gathering is likely to be on the high side of things.  Still, it’s money in my pocket and almost enough to cover that new collection of science fiction short stories that just came out.  Who am I to argue with found money?

“Oh, the Ringworld is Unstable / But It Won’t Be Shown on Cable…*”

…Bezos optioned up this fable
And that’s good enough for me!

The Jack Ryan series trailer for Amazon.

It’s an interesting technique that they’re using here; you can see what the theme of what Jack Ryan will be without Amazon saying a word. I’m also fascinated at the thought of a Tom Clancy movie that doesn’t jump through hoops to avoid admitting… ah, yes, never mind. Let’s just say that this appears to be accurate in a way that the The Sum of All Fears movie could not be.

Amazon announces… changes… to Whole Foods.

Essentially: starting Monday, cheaper prices and steady integration into Amazon Prime and other services. Oh, and there’ll be a rollout of Amazon Lockers at Whole Foods. And whatever other bribes that Amazon can think of, I’m sure.

Whoa. The new live-action Tick… might not… suck?

Huh.  I’ve been, you know, assuming that it’s gonna suck, because let’s face it; it’s hard for our culture to do the Tick properly.  And yet; and, yet.  This is not a bad trailer. It promises a certain level of respect for the intellectual property.

The Tick will be released to Amazon Prime members on August 25th.

7102017 Day today, Prime Day Tomorrow!

Today is kind of neat, in a palindrome kind of way: you can write today’s date (July 10, 2017) in numeric form so it’s the same, backwards and forwards (7102017).  Which means nothing in the greater scheme of things, of course.  But it’s still cool.

And tomorrow is Amazon’s Prime Day.  Well, actually today is Prime Day, annnnd there’s a code (PRIMEBOOKS17) for $5 off book purchases over $15.  It’s not five bucks per book, and it’s Amazon-only — but that’s still potentially worth contemplating, yes?

More on that Amazon/Whole Foods thing.

It is apparently freaking the shttps://moelane.com/2017/06/16/more-on-that-ama…hole-foods-thing/upermarket industry out. More accurately, it’s freaking out investors. Fox Business:

Kroger shares slumped 11 percent, United Natural Foods Inc tumbled 17 percent, Sprouts Farmers Market Inc sank 11 percent. The S&P 500 food and staples retailing index was off 5 percent… Wal-Mart dropped 6 percent and Target Corp dropped 10.6 percent… [European] Supermarket chain Tesco Plc shed 2.9 percent and Carrefour dipped 2.6 percent.

Tweet of the WEEK, This Is How The Amazon/Whole Foods Thing Went Down edition.

Yes.  Yes, this is precisely what happened.  This is what always happened, if we have to rewrite the universe itself to make it true.

Amazon opening… physical book stores.

Sometimes I think that Amazon seeks to have the same relationship with the Sherman Antitrust Act as a matador does with the bull.

Amazon’s first physical bookstore in New York, located in the high-end shopping center at Columbus Circle, was quietly bustling when I visited on a recent muggy spring day around lunchtime. …The biggest thing you’ll notice when you walk into an Amazon Bookstore (there are six others around the country, and Amazon plans on opening another six) is that all of the books are displayed with their covers facing the customer, as opposed to the traditional spine-out presentation on the bookshelves of most bookstores. It has a certain charm, but it also feels like you’ve wandered into a bookstore that’s suddenly run very low on inventory and is trying to take up space.

Is there a workaround for the Can’t-add-Kindle-to-cart problem?

Because it’s a little annoying.  Basically, the problem is that when I want to buy a book on Amazon in Kindle form I have to buy it with One-Click; there’s no ‘Add to Cart’ option. Which is relevant because there’s House Money, and there’s My Money.  I can choose an account that draws from My Money when I’m checking out from the cart; but I can’t when it’s a One-click situation.  Also, One-click doesn’t recognize gift card or cashback money, which is also annoying.

Somebody please tell me that there’s a field I just need to uncheck, or something. I’d be fine with looking dumb, as long as my problem gets solved.
