People made sure I saw this…

…annnnd ANNE SHIRLEY looks fine! I don’t speak Japanese, so I’m gonna need subtitles because I’m part of that faction, but, you know, nothing about it appears bad. I am known to have opinions about the proper treatment of the Anne of Green Gables novels, and I offer neither apologies nor regrets for that. But ANNE SHIRLEY feels like it’ll be a clean adaptation.

So, they’re doing an anime Anne of Green Gables.

There is a certain bitter irony in the fact that I far more trust a Japanese anime studio to do a better job of making a proper Anne of Green Gables show than I do a Western live-action one. If this is what we’ll be getting, it’ll be delightful. And since this site’s Web Dude has indicated that Anne is Big In Japan, it probably will be what we’ll be getting, at that.

Still: trust, but verify.

The Vanity Fair ‘Anne with an E’ review, or: “There Is a Red Haze Across My Vision*.”

It is a rare thing when I read a Vanity Fair article and find nothing in it worth starting a squabble with the author over: but it happens, every so often.  Joanna Robinson has reviewed the Netflix series Anne with an E (because apparently Anne of Green Gables was deemed to be a title that was not able to move the product**), and while she does not actually come out and say that she’s ready to grab a bullwhip and and a pitchfork and go chastise the wicked, I suspect that Ms. Robinson would not be adverse to joining the mob.
