“The U.S. military campaign against Islamic militants in Syria is being designed to allow President Obama to exert a high degree of personal control over the campaign, going so far as to require that the military obtain presidential sign-off for any strike in Syrian territory,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

To expand on something I said on Twitter earlier today: considering just how much the Left loves to describe every military action in terms of Vietnam, you would think that more of them would actually have a basic familiarity with the war, its origins, and how we fought it.

The White House believes that Congress’s 2002 authorization of the Iraq war — and not just the 2001 authorization to fight Al Qaeda — provides a legal justification for President Obama’s air campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, the Obama administration said Friday.

Background: Bruce Ackerman is one of those people.  You know: Harvard, Yale Law, a long and fruitful career writing articles in the right upper-crust policy journals and books that invariably get published via university presses.  A fellow at that intersection of academia and Beltway culture, in other words: and my, but did he not enjoy the Bush administration!  All the wrong sort were around that decade, apparently.

Seriously, take a look:

Barack Obama chooses the worst possible partisan action on immigration issue.

I say this as a RiNO pro-amnesty squish: this decision is senseless.

Abandoning his pledge to act by the end of summer, President Barack Obama has decided to delay any executive action on immigration until after the November congressional elections, White House officials said.

The move instantly infuriated immigration advocates while offering relief to some vulnerable Democrats in tough Senate re-election contests.

…in no small part because it will not, in fact, give any relief to vulnerable Democrats (all of whom I want to see defeated at the polls, by the way).  The President has picked the worst possible solution, even if you assume that Barack Obama basic motivating principle is rank partisanship (which it is).  And here’s why: doing something out of rank partisanship implies that you expect to get something back.  But there’s nothing to get back, here. Field Poll: Barack Obama’s appeal going sharply downward in California.

45/42 favorable ratings. In California.  This is not good news for Democrats, going into the formal 2014 election season: I mean, imagine how Obama’s doing elsewhere.

Mark DiCamillo, director of the Field Poll, said the trend is ominous for Obama, because the latest declines come from his base.

Support among California Democrats dropped 8 percentage points to 68 percent over the last three months. Approval was down 11 points in Los Angeles County and 7 points in the Bay Area, usually liberal strongholds.

“These are constituencies that have been strong followers,” DiCamillo said. But there’s “frustration in the president not getting his way in affecting policy in Washington.”

…and the word I bolded there is interesting. At first I thought that either DiCamillo or the reporter who wrote the article got the word wrong: it should be ‘effecting.’  But then I remembered: when a Democratic President is weak* it’s never his fault.  There are a lot of people out there with a vested interest in pretending that Barack Obama is a mere hapless spectator in the legislative process, mostly because then they don’t have to deal with the actual truth.  Which is, of course, that Barack Obama wants to direct the process; he’s just stunningly incompetent at it**. Watch national and Wisconsin Democrats backpedal, backpedal, backpedal…

In addition to a Milwaukee visit on Monday, President Barack Obama will return to Wisconsin before Nov. 4 to campaign for Democratic candidate for governor Mary Burke, a party spokesman said Thursday.

The announcement made to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel came swiftly after Republicans criticized Burke for saying she couldn’t appear with Obama during his Labor Day visit to Milwaukee because it was an official stop, not a campaign event.

Burke’s campaign had strenuously objected to the GOP claims she was ducking the president because of his lackluster approval rating…

…because while it’s certainly true that the President has a lackluster approval rating, and that Mary Burke kind of hates the idea of being in the same photo frame as Barack Obama these days, well, Obama still does have supporters.  And if Mary Burke insults their hero too much but being too honest about him, then Mary Burke is going to have even more electoral problems than she has right now.  The dance is, as they say, delicate. In an election that Republicans want to make all about President Barack Obama, the White House is determined to make him all but disappear in the battleground states that matter.

The White House is putting the finishing touches on a post-Labor Day schedule that will send the president to states where he’s still popular, such as: Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Illinois and California, Obama officials and Democratic operatives said this week.

I didn’t think that it would, but check out the casual cruelty of Esquire.

I’ve been dealing with Barack Obama’s constant and comprehensive litany of failure for going on six years now. This is the first time that I’ve seen Esquire treat the President like he was just like any other schlub with no sense of taste: which is to say, roughly, and with a casual indifference to how it made Obama feel. It’s… kind of refreshing, really. Although I don’t think that Obama’s going to feel the same way, what with the way he’s been treated as a God-King since 2007…
