Scenes from the Class Struggle in Portland, Oregon*.

Those dang Californians.

Portlanders have had it with those board shorts and kale smoothies, and now they’re rising up to stick it to the Californians-literally. According to the Oregonian, upset citizens are placing “No Californian” stickers on For Sale signs throughout the city. The state is currently receiving an influx of out-of-state buyers, forcing housing prices to skyrocket.

Realtor Lori Fenwick was notified of the incidents when one of her buyers sent her a photo of a defaced sign. She shared her findings with a real estate group on Facebook and quickly learned that she wasn’t the only victim. Three other realtors piped up including Quinn Irvine of M Realty. “A lot of these homes are going into bidding wars and going over ask price,” he said. “And a lot of these guys are getting outbid. And I think they’re going around to agents who have properties that have sold over ask price and putting anti-California stickers.”

(Via Hot Air, via Instapundit) Apparently, lots of the people fleeing the drought in California are going north to Oregon, which is sensible enough (Oregon is considerably wetter than California**) but not pleasing to the Oregonians who are already there. Specifically, apparently, the people in Portland. For added fun, check out comments here at the original article.  There’s a certain whiff of entitlement permeating it, and I’m not entirely sure from which side.  Ach, well, not really my problem.

*If you’ve never seen Scenes From The Class Struggle In Beverly Hills, I’m not surprised: it’s apparently never been released on DVD in this country. It is… an interesting film. Memorable?  Yes, let’s go with ‘memorable.’

**Also, better they go north, instead of east. Although the people living to the north would probably disagree.

Rep. Mike Honda (D, CA-17) squirms under allegations he mixed campaign business with House business.

When you do politics, you should always read local newspaper reports whenever possible. They often tell you things that you won’t hear from the national news organizations.  Case in point: Mike Honda (D, CA-17). He had a bad week, from a ‘campaign shenanigans’ point of view.  This is how The Hill described it:

Shown notes from his district office’s staff retreat, Rep. Michael M. Honda allegedly acknowledged to ethics investigators that what he was seeing was “open to a lot of interpretation, but it doesn’t look good.”

The California Democrat’s former campaign manager presented official staff with a strategy in which district office events would be used to raise money, according to Office of Congressional Ethics documents released Thursday.

Finding a tiger cub wandering free in California is NOT the problem, here.

See if you can spot the problem.

A three-month-old tiger cub was found roaming neighborhoods in the Inland Empire on Thursday and has been taken to an animal shelter, CBS Los Angeles reports.

The two-foot-long tiger was turned into the Ramona Humane Society in San Jacinto by a woman who found it in her neighborhood in Hemet. It was not immediately clear where the tiger had come from. Continue reading Finding a tiger cub wandering free in California is NOT the problem, here.

Shocker: Californian green job tax ‘didn’t work.’ Unless ‘impact crater’ counts.

Raise your hand, everybody who’s surprised: “Three years after California voters passed a ballot measure to raise taxes on corporations and generate clean-energy jobs by funding energy-efficiency projects in schools, barely one-tenth of the promised jobs have been created, and the state has no comprehensive list to show how much work has been done or how much energy has been saved.”

[lowering hand]

What? I was surprised. I would have personally bet that California wouldn’t manage to get past one-twentieth.  To get a whole one-tenth must have involved people with whips. Or possibly cattle prods.

Is a storm a-coming to California?

They’re hoping:

The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center said Thursday that all computer models are predicting a strong El Niño to peak in the late fall or early winter. A host of observations have led scientists to conclude that “collectively, these atmospheric and oceanic features reflect a significant and strengthening El Niño.”

Certainly California needs it.  On the other hand, apparently even a mega-El Nino won’t fix California’s drought problem, but every little bit helps, you know? And on the gripping hand… the researchers and people quoted in that article left themselves a lot of wiggle room. So I guess we’ll see if it rains.

Just had to toss an entire post…

…because some photographer included a naked underage teenager protester butt in his picture of older, but no less naked, protester butts, all of which were protesting the removal of trees that apparently vent flammable gas and explode during dry-season brush fires.  I couldn’t make the story work without linking to the site showing off the problematical buttocks. I simply could not.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

GOP introduces bill to save Californian farms from Democratic religious fanatics.

My God. This is… this is intelligent.

The California Republican delegation, along with other key Western lawmakers, today introduced a bill that would loosen environmental restrictions on water being pumped to farms and cities in the drought-ridden Central Valley. The bill, officially introduced by David Valadao, also would free up major water storage projects in the west, offering more flexibility for the construction of dams and reservoirs.

[snip]

The bill would sidestep a Fish and Wildlife Service order that restricted the amount of water pumped to farms and cities, instead letting it flow to sea in order to protect the Delta smelt, a threatened fish species. The bill would reopen those spigots and allow water to flow from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to the agriculture-rich Central Valley until regulators can prove that the smelt and other species, such as the salmonid (a family of fish including various types of salmon), are being harmed by the pumping. Should they find the fish are being harmed, regulators would then have to undertake a study of viable alternatives before against imposing the limit. It also requires federal regulators to consider different surveys and monitoring techniques in evaluating the fish population.

Clueless in California: dumb rich people complain about having to conserve water.

If nothing else, social media teaches us this: not everybody should be on social media. Case in point

Drought or no drought, Steve Yuhas resents the idea that it is somehow shameful to be a water hog. If you can pay for it, he argues, you should get your water.

People “should not be forced to live on property with brown lawns, golf on brown courses or apologize for wanting their gardens to be beautiful,” Yuhas fumed recently on social media. “We pay significant property taxes based on where we live,” he added in an interview. “And, no, we’re not all equal when it comes to water.”

How Rep. Scott Peters (D, CA-52) ALLEGEDLY got away with smearing Carl Demaio.

Scott Peters, of course, was the Democrat who managed to win in 2014 when last-minute accusations against opponent Carl DeMaio surfaced in the final days of the election.  Funny how that happened, huh? Anyway, it should shock none of you to hear that those accusations were complete and utter [expletive deleted]:

But the final weeks of the campaign focused to a large degree on allegations made by a former DeMaio staff member. His campaign never recovered, and DeMaio blamed his defeat on the charges and the Peters campaign’s alleged role in spreading them.

On Friday, the ex-staffer admitted in federal court that he lied when he claimed to have gotten anonymous emails threatening that he would never work again in politics if he revealed things about DeMaio.

Todd Bosnich, 29, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice by lying to the FBI about the emails. Until Friday, it was not known publicly that the federal government was investigating the emails.

California OSHA to require… goggles… on porn stars.

I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP:

Last week, California’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHA) proposed a new raft of safety standards for porn production sets in the state, raising ire and eyebrows in the process. The standards, which have yet to be finalized, fill 21 pages and detail a wide range of new safety protocols actors and their employers would have to abide by on set. Nestled among them is a provision about “eye protection.” That’s right, goggles. Goggles, to be worn by porn actors, in porn films.

Well now.  I wonder how long it’s going to be before a state that borders California decides that it’s going to take advantage of California’s apparent desire to drive out the adult film industry? – Because this is what ‘more government’ looks like, folks.  And the state bureaucracy doesn’t care whether or not you find this stuff hot.
