Marvel reportedly to drop Captain Marvel, Avengers 4 trailers this week.

The Time of the Universal Losing of the Excrement is upon us, in other words:

According to entertainment YouTuber John Campea, Marvel Studios will debut the new trailer for Captain Marvel at halftime during tomorrow’s Monday Night Football matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington football team.

Marvel fans and bloggers Daniel RPK and Manabyte have also been dropping teases all week, confirming the Captain Marvel news in the wake of Campea’s tweet. They also purported that the Avengers 4 trailer will be coming on Wednesday, December 5th, possibly during the episode of Good Morning America.

Samuel L Jackson gets the Mother Of All Face Lifts for Captain Marvel.

Nah, that’s not gonna look freaky at all: “Kevin Feige has confirmed to Slash Film that moviegoers will see Samuel L. Jackson de-aged for the entire runtime of [Captain Marvel].” As Coming Soon notes there, Disney/Marvel has been playing with this tech for a while now in the MCU: Ant-Man, Civil War, apparently Ant-Man and the Wasp (the crud going around Chez Lane has completely screwed up my plans to see the movie), and now Captain Marvel.  Oh, and they did something similar with Rogue One*. Marvel thinking of introducing Ms. Marvel after introducing Captain Marvel.

I have no idea if Ms. Marvel is going to be introduced in whatever Captain Marvel movie Marvel uses to reunite Mar-vell with Captain Marvel, assuming of course that Mar-Vell survives the upcoming Captain Marvel movie that Marvel’s releasing this year.  After all, Marvel having Mar-Vell die nobly will certainly help establish Captain Marvel’s heroic stature, but Marvel might want to keep him around for the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Also left unsaid is whether Captain Marvel starts her Marvel movie as Ms. Marvel; if Captain Marvel does, then Marvel can have her become Captain Marvel when and if Mar-Vell sacrifices himself, thus allowing Ms. Marvel to become, well, Ms. Marvel because the name’s now free.

:pause:

And then there’s the Shazam movie.  Which has nothing to do with Sinbad. …Yeah, sorry about that.

PS: I’d rather see Squirrel Girl first, obviously.

Gemma Chan cast as Kree villain in Captain Marvel movie.

The casting on the Captain Marvel flick looks pretty good: “[Gemma Chan] joins a cast that includes Brie Larson as the title hero along with Samuel L. Jackson as a younger (and two-eyed) Nick Fury, with DeWanda Wise (She’s Gotta Have It), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One, Ready Player One), and Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes). The film will be a “period piece” for Marvel Studios and take place in the early 1990s with the Skrulls as the primary villains.” …they got Jude Law? Ah, he’s going to be the male lead (Mar-vell) and Mendelsohn is going to be the male villain.  That sounds promising, not least because Jude Law is a little bit crazy. Not bad crazy, interesting crazy: Continue reading Gemma Chan cast as Kree villain in Captain Marvel movie.

I wonder if Disney is going to move up Captain Marvel now.

Or is that even a sensible strategy?  I’m not sure how this sort of thing games out. Does not having Captain Marvel out until 2019 build up the expectations for that movie — because it will be compared to Wonder Woman; I can almost see the think pieces in the aether, waiting to be manifested — for too long? Or does the studio want some distance in time between Wonder Woman and this flick? Weirdly, this is the one field in the DC/Marvel media wars where Marvel is at a disadvantage; the MCU doesn’t go in much for iconic (given how Marvel’s original iconic characters were all farmed out to other studios, it largely can’t). Wonder Woman is a solidly iconic movie at this point, and I suspect that there’s going to be another round of think pieces when it doesn’t get any serious Oscar nominations*. Extremely ticked-off ones.

*The Academy purely hates superhero flicks. Even when they’re better than what normally gets the nomination.  Particularly when they’re better, in fact. The only reason they gave Heath Ledger that Best Supporting Actor Oscar was because it was posthumous.

I don’t think that they can avoid a Captain Marvel origin story.

If for no other reason than there’s going to be some confusion over which Captain Marvel is getting a movie (in this case, the Marvel comics superheroine).  The character is not as well known as, say, Spider-man or Batman; so introducing her makes a certain amount of sense. …Unless they drag Captain Marvel into a MCU film before then, but there’s already a lot of superheroes cycling through those already.

Brie Larson to play Captain Marvel.

Come, I will conceal nothing from you: I barely know who Captain Marvel is – or who Brie Larson is, either. In fact, what I know about Captain Marvel is wrong, because I’m confusing her with someone from DC’s Marvel family.  This is kind of deliberate, in fact, because (I looked it up) the ‘Captain Marvel’ trademark has been the subject of a war between DC and Marvel for decades.  This character exists largely because of that war.

But it doesn’t really goram matter, now does it?  I mean… I never read Ant-Man. Didn’t matter. Didn’t really read the Avengers. Didn’t matter.  I’ve read precisely one issue of Guardians of the Galaxy.  DID. NOT. MATTER.  And when Doctor Strange comes out later this year, it won’t matter that I’ve never read his comic book, either.  Marvel owns my eyeballs at this point, and I don’t even blipping mind.

Now, if they would just get the Fantastic Four back into the MCU where they belong, that would be swell…
