The Order of the Miasmic Scalpel exists to heal the sick and wounded — as long as doing so would aid the cause of Evil. There are very few places in the world where the Order operates freely, but most major cities have a hidden temple or clinic.  The Order’s missionaries are a bit more open; in fact, most Dark Hordes or other evil-themed armies will have a tireless and proactive contingent of Order physicians. In the rear. Far, far in the rear, where the enemies of evil can’t get to them.

The Order of Saint Cyprian is a Roman Catholic religious order (Benedictine Rule) of both monks and nuns; what makes the Order unique is that membership is restricted to supernatural entities. This, in practice, means everyone from human magicians to actual demons.  Members of the Order are segregated by sex; males go to a monastery in Ireland, and females go to an abbey (New Zealand).

It is privately owned, aggressively protects its privacy, and relies heavily on its client list to keep governmental interference to a minimum.  With that kind of operating methodology, you’d expect MCB to be a truly awful corporation — and guess what? The records are there, if you know just where to look in the right Department of Defense archives.  They’re neither outrageously classified nor creatively misfiled, but they are quite sparse, and somewhat technicla.  SUBRON Abyssal started out as an American program, but later took on ‘official’ status as a NATO operation, with Israeli assets added in the 1960s.  The squadron today consists of the following submarines:

 

  • HMS Affray (UK)
  • INS Dakar (Israeli)
  • Minerve (France)
  • USS Scorpion
  • USS Thresher

One was called the Biometric-Learning (IMmersive) Protocols (BLIMP), and the other was known as the Zero-Emission, Population-Planning (Extra-Legal Invasive) Network (ZEPPELIN). They were both functional artificial intelligences: BLIMP was created via a DARPA grant in 1965, while ZEPPELIN was a private research project that achieved sentience 1967.  The records for both are spotty, since BLIMP and ZEPPELIN fought each other to presumably mutual destruction over the course of the next ten years.

Lycanthropes — and other were-species, to be sure — have always been a difficult issue for the Church.  Penitent vampires generally have been a self-correcting problem; intelligent artificial constructs have been cleared for the last two centuries by a secret Papal bull noting that the Almighty was just as capable of ensouling a created life-form as He was of a natural-born child; and if a non-human could survive the baptismal process, well, that was that.  But werewolves were problematical. The cursed ones could be cured, of course; but the ones born into the condition were often harder to treat.  At the same time, many of these people were genuinely good sorts who happened to turn into wild beasts during the full moon. They were ill, not evil.

The Conservatory started out in classic paranoid Cold War fashion: formed in 1947 as part of the provisions of the National Security Act of 1947, part of Majestic-12 and MK-ULTRA since the very beginning of both programs, firmly part of the Deep State, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.  Its focus has always been in the field of psionic development, and its efforts have long since paid off.  Conservatory scientists have by now worked out the basic principles of telepathy, psychokinesis, ESP, and bioenergy — including how to almost reliably encourage those talents in non-psionic individuals.  They also have a near-monopoly on the creation and training of psionic assets in and for the Shadow Government, and the Conservatory protects that monopoly ruthlessly.

(EIP)  is rapidly turning into a mega-corporation and will probably become the ultra-corporation of the 2040s.  Why?  Reliable Artificial Intelligences.  EIP has AI, they can produce it on demand, and nobody can duplicate what they do.  There’s just something about their code that can’t be reverse engineered, or even successfully pirated.  And believe me, people have tried.  For that matter, EIP’s been remarkably indifferent to corporate espionage tactics: CEO Judith Bezalel has even offered a job to anybody who can break EIP’s tampering software. As of yet, nobody’s been known to have succeeded.

It is certain that the two entities that run this particular corporation are not actually named ‘Greenhalgh’ or ‘Meegeren;’ names have power, which means that anyone who runs the best emergency forgery firm in three universes would be well-advised to use a pseudonym whenever possible.  Even when that firm operates perfectly legally.  Even if ‘legally’ is itself at best an euphemism.
