Quote of the Day, I WANT TO BELIEVE edition. (Guardians of the Galaxy)

I really want this movie not to suck. From Thom Dunn’s Tor.com review of Guardians of the Galaxy:

But if you’re anything like me, and somehow haven’t gotten sick of the ironic juxtaposition of 70s pop music set against the backdrop of a technicolor Mos Eisley, I’m here to tell you that Guardian’s of the Galaxy is the greatest remake of Footloose that you will likely ever see.

I really, really, really want this movie not to suck.  For both noble and ignoble reasons.  The thought of Hollywood being just the slightest bit scared of Marvel amuses me.

…but, yeah, I may have been one of the few people out there who thought Wanted was a desperate cry for help from the comic book community. So, anyway, from
173 Things We Learned From The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Trailer:

Star-Lord is very attached to his Walkman, which plays the 1974 song “Hooked On A Feeling” by Blue Swede, which you have had stuck in your head all day. ALL DAY. Clearly Star-Lord has no way of replacing this treasured possession, which means he hasn’t been on Earth since about the mid-’80s. That means he may have missed the whole grim-n-gritty era of comics in the late ’80s that started with Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns and quickly deteriorated into twenty years of garbage. So he probably doesn’t know that superheroes are supposed to be violent, miserable and humorless. Does this mean this movie might actually be fun?

We think so.

It might, rabbit, it might.

As to my reaction: well, as I told Constant Reader BigGator5, there’s no middle ground for this flick.  Awesome, or stupid.  Which isn’t a bad sign, because I said the same thing about Pacific Rim.

PS: Maybe stupid awesome, though. On the one hand, it’s got a raccoon with a machine gun and a buddy who’s a tree. Then again, it’s got a raccoon with a machine gun and a buddy who’s a tree. As you may have guessed, I didn’t read this particular Marvel comic line…
