Taika Waititi to do Thor 4, at the expense of Akira.

That’s pretty much what that boils down to: Taika Waititi will direct the next Thor movie, but they’re going to have to push back Akira (which he is/was already supposed to direct) in exchange. Let me be honest: I fully expected that a live-action Akira would be horrible, although I didn’t realize that Waititi would be directing it. Another Thor movie with Waititi directing it will likely not be horrible, so this works out as being an net improvement.

Akira fans are, of course, free to disagree with me on this topic, and I will fully understand and not take offense.

The Captain Marvel Honest Trailer.

It’s very insightful — which is to say, it matched my opinion of the movie. I never thought that Captain Marvel was actually bad for what it was, which was a Marvel origin story. It occurs to me that that’s the problem that most Marvel origin stories had: they’re only origin stories, instead of the ‘superhero + something else’ model that the best MCU flicks have*.

…Clobbering time? 2022 Fantastic Four movie rumors abound.

MoeLane.com cannot confirm, but will eagerly quote, the following:

The GWW is hearing, but cannot confirm, that Marvel Studios is aiming for a 2022 release for the ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot. Sources also say that ‘Ant-Man’ director Peyton Reed is pushing to direct, and has already pitched his vision for the movie to Feige multiple times. Reed’s pitch includes a 1960s setting that involves the Quantum Realm, and possibly The Black Knight.

I would not be really down with a HYPOTHETICAL Deadpool/Spidey MCU movie.

Despite GeekTyrant’s reaction to the possibility. Wouldn’t really work, anyway. Spider-Man is still Sony, even if Deadpool is Disney/Marvel now; and I cannot imagine that Ryan Reynolds and his crew are going to be willing to do the PG-13 version that Sony would expect*. And, comes right down to it: the tone would be off. On both sides. I don’t know what the hell Spider-Man would do with a Deadpool. Shoot, I don’t know what Deadpool would do with a Spider-Man, and neither would he.

Mind you, if they want to release Deadpool Rifftrax or something to MCU and Spider-verse flicks, well, I could be down with that.

*Neither side would wrong, by the way. Sony is doing well for itself by making Spider-Man movies that I could take my kids to see; and Reynolds et. al. are doing well for themselves by making hysterical R-rated Deadpool flicks. There’s no shame in the fact that there’s no overlap.

Avengers: Endgame gets a 1.2 billion opening weekend.

Avengers: Endgame shattered the bounds of realistic opening weekend predictions this weekend, with a towering $350 million domestic and $1.2 billion in its global debut. Of note, 45% of that came from 3-D showings around the world while $91.5 million came from IMAX (double their previous opening weekend record) and even 4DX earned $15 million globally on the title.

Domestically, the film earned a 2.23x multiplier (not bad considering the numbers) and snagged the biggest Thursday preview ($60 million), the biggest “pure Friday” ($96.7 million), the biggest single-day gross ($156.7 million on Friday counting the previews), the biggest Saturday ($109 million, down just 31% from Friday) and biggest Sunday grosses ($84.3 million) even when adjusted for inflation.

My opening weekend prediction for Avengers: Endgame.

Ready? Here you go: a metric sh*tload. Which is what everybody else is saying, only they’re trying to gussy it up more: “Fandango reported this month that it sold out thousands of Endgame showtimes on its website and that theater owners were scrambling to post new showtimes and screens to meet fan demand (some as early as 4 AM and 6:30 AM for its opening day Friday). In its first seven days of presales on Fandango, Endgame sold five times as many tickets as last year’s Avengers: Infinity War.”

I’ve seen everything from three hundred million domestic to nine hundred million worldwide, and I absolutely decline to come up with a harder number than ‘metric sh*tload.’ This movie is gonna be a monster. I didn’t have trouble getting a ticket only because I’m going next Monday at 11 AM.

I am skeptical. “During a recent interview with Bilibili, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that Phase 3 actually ends with Far From Home, saying, “It’s the end of the third phase. You’re the first person I’ve told that to.””
