I hope I’m not giving any spoilers, here.
Five months into his second term, allies and enemies are as confounded as ever about who President Obama really is.
Barack Obama is a mildly intelligent man who has never been really pushed by anything in his life. He’s not especially intellectually curious, has never learned how to control his boredom, and thinks that the rather vicious local political culture that he – and much more importantly, his staff – was steeped in actually is how they do things Downtown. I’m sure that the man thinks that he has principles, and an organized plan to follow them; but the former are as unfinished as the rest of Barack Obama and the latter boils down to ‘make speeches until the adoring mob does all the heavy lifting.’ And, of course, he’s marking time until 2017. That’s when the best part about being President starts for Barack Obama; all of the respect, all of the perks, nobody will expect him to do a single darn thing.
That’s who Barack Obama really is.

PS: Also, Barack Obama has daddy issues.
PPS: I know, I know. There are people who would prefer that Barack Obama be a dastardly Machiavellian schemer dedicated to the destruction of the American Republic, because then he’d at least give a tinker’s dam about the job and the position and the country. Alas, no, we’re not that lucky, for a given value of ‘lucky.’ It’s almost a pity, really: the damage from a would-be super-villain would be simpler to fix.
[* I have had it noted in Twitter that the difference between ‘disinterested’ and ‘uninterested’ is currently a linguistic brawl; and that I am apparently on the other side of it. Not being sure what I actually think about said brawl, I will just note that yes, I meant that Obama simply doesn’t give a {redacted}.]
In re: PPS:
He’s not the Machiavellian one, it’s his fixers and “advisors” (read: Jarrett, et al.) that are the schemers. He’s just the sizzle used to sell the giant crapsteak.
And, of course, he’s marking time until 2017. That’s when the best part about being President starts for Barack Obama; all of the respect, all of the perks, nobody will expect him to do a single darn thing.
But we did our best to give him this status in 2013!
Barack Obama has an agenda; he’s just unaware of his deficiencies and deluded about how to achieve his goals. But as zamoose said, his “advisors” are the real schemers.
Oh, and once Barack Obama becomes an ex-president, he won’t have the budget for travel and entertainment that he’s grown accustomed to spending.
A twice-elected President has much better speaking prospects than a also-ran once-and-done. E.g. Carter/Bush ’41 vs. Clinton.
