I laughed and laughed and laughed. Webcomic artist Coelasquid:
Anyway yeah, when I was a kid we had some like, Avengers pinball machine with Cap[*] on it at the Rec Centre and it would always run that “Winners don’t do drugs” PSA all 90′s arcade games did. And it was like “Is this really the best character to attach this message to…?”
Of course, I am now having difficulty with the thought that there are adults out there who think of the Nineties as ‘when I was a kid.’

*’Cap’ = ‘Captain America,’ of course.
Technically, it didn’t say “Winners don’t inject themselves with custom-engineered Super Soldier serum”, so Cap is a perfectly cromulent spokesman.
Yeah, those “Winners Don’t Use Drugs” messages date back to at least 1989. My Black Knight 2000 pinball machine has it. I knew guys that took glee in putting their initials as POT or THC or LSD just for the contrast with that message.
I can’t think of any Avengers pinball machine in the 1990s, though, and I played almost everything that was out there then. There is a Stern Avengers pinball machine (and Iron Man, and X-Men), but it was released contemporaneously with the movie of the same name.
Doing a bit of googling, it seems like this message was on video games and pinball from 1989 to 2000: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winners_Don%27t_Use_Drugs
Now I’m going to have to hunt around on ipdb.org to see if I can figure out what machine he’s talking about.
