Cue the Nerd’s Prayer*:
2017 for the movie; presumably the anime – because that’s what it’s probably going to be, more or less – will be rather earlier. Or not. You never know, with this stuff.
Still. Cool. There’s room in the monster movie genre for both Pacific Rim and Godzilla, which is also getting a sequel (duh). Heck, I still hold out hope for a Cloverfield sequel.

PS: The reason Guillermo del Toro got green-lighted for this project is pretty much because Chinese moviegoers threw lots and lots of money at it – something that this analysis of the problems with a sequel may not be taking into account. Mind you, I have absolutely no idea what silliness a Chinese audience will tolerate when it comes to a sequel’s plot holes – but I suspect that I am going to find out.
*Please, God, don’t let it suck.
Hey, it’s all good. I want more giant robot punching monsters in the face. Hell, Pacific Rim’s Rocket Punch is one of the most glorious thing on cinema.
I’m just trying to figure out how such things work narratively.
At the end of the first one, the world was saved, the rift closed, and the attackers nuked. That doesn’t really lend itself to a sequel.
