I suggest that people try to handle it by being more kindly to each other. And don’t be afraid to turn off the computer from time to time, when it gets too rough. Well-informed is one thing; obsessively-following for no good reason is a different story entirely.

.
…
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
.
And the burnt Fool’s bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
.
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
.
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
.
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
.
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

.
This particular bit of Kipling has been much on my mind of late.

I’ll see your Copybook Headings with another Kipling.
Macdonough’s Song by Rudyard Kipling
“As easy as A B C”–A Diversity of Creatures”
Whether the State can loose and bind
In Heaven as well as on Earth:
If it be wiser to kill mankind
Before or after the birth–
These are matters of high concern
Where State-kept schoolmen are;
But Holy State (we have lived to learn)
Endeth in Holy War.
Whether The People be led by The Lord,
Or lured by the loudest throat:
If it be quicker to die by the sword
Or cheaper to die by vote–
These are things we have dealt with once,
(And they will not rise from their grave)
For Holy People, however it runs,
Endeth in wholly Slave.
Whatsoever, for any cause,
Seeketh to take or give
Power above or beyond the Laws,
Suffer it not to live!
Holy State or Holy King–
Or Holy People’s Will–
Have no truck with the senseless thing.
Order the guns and kill!
Saying –after–me:–
Once there was The People–Terror gave it birth;
Once there was The People and it made a Hell of Earth
Earth arose and crushed it. Listen, 0 ye slain!
Once there was The People–it shall never be again!

I’ve had Don McLean’s American Pie on mine:
“…I saw Satan laughing with delight…”
Only a week?
I think that’s unduly optimistic.
