New D&D ruleset comes out tomorrow.

Is it time to get back up on the merry-go-round?

I jumped off after 2nd ed: my wife was the AD&D player of the two of us, and I have so many other RPGs to occupy my time. But the Saturday game is talking about a mini-campaign… I dunno. Guess I’ll stick it on the Wish List.

  1. The starter set has been out for about a month, the rules are free in PDF from the publisher. I like some of the rule changes. All the dice are still present. The starter box comes with condensed rules and monsters for a 1-5 level campaign. Loved 2e as a youth but I don’t miss THAC0.

There is so many choices in RPGs, I think this edition is good if you want that classic fantasy theme. Suspect it may be eaasier to get into for newer players than Pathfinder, which is based on 3.5 rules.

  2. I’ll get it at some point, but my entertainment fund is currently directed at Destiny.

    I loathed/hated 3rd edition with a purple polka-dotted passion. Including 3.5 and Pathfinder.

I didn’t care strongly about 4th edition in either direction. It was a much better game, but it gave the illusion of choice without much in the way of actual choice. (Also, it didn’t invoke nostalgia. Which is the main reason I’d play D&D.)

This version looks a lot better than the previous 2-1/2. I wish they’d bring back THAC0, but I guess we can’t have everything. (Yes, I’m serious. I hate this open-ended crap where you become comic book superheroes in less fashionable clothes.)

  3. I started buying 4e out of habit, but about midway through came to my senses and went back to Pathfinder. I’m kind of vaguely embarrassed that for the first time in 33 years of gaming I don’t have actual D&D books on my gaming shelf, but the reality is that 4e really ceased to be D&D in any identifiable form (and I very much second what Luke said about it providing the illusion of choice and flexibility without actual choice and flexibility; one of the stated design goals was to make it play like an MMO, and the authors definitely succeeded).

I haven’t read anything about 5e, so I wouldn’t know what I’d be buying. I may wait a few months until the initial hype dies down and I can leaf through a copy of the new Player’s Handbook at my FLGS.

  4. Call me old-fashioned, but B/X Basic still works fine for me.

And yes, get off my lawn.
