Solar works pretty well, in areas with good sun. (hint: check city-data.com and look for the “sunshine” graph)

If you plan to use solar in an area you’re not certain of, bring double the panels you expect to need.

What I can’t believe is why they didn’t test it before hand. I guess when you have a gaggle of French Literature and Women’s Studies majors, no one thinks of these things.
